Its a really sad affair most of the time as gradually all those fresh new
local start ups we saw in the beginning have effectively sold out to large
organisations and been absorbed into a mostly homogenous network of the
gold, Smooth, Magic networks Only a few others seem to still exist in some
of the larger towns, but one does wonder how long they will hold out
considering many of them are playlist driven and often automatic at night.
I guess we have seen some new ones like Boom, but without transmitters and
mainly on the internet, will they stay within the vision of the broadcasters
who started them. Greatest Hits radio, is slowly going formulaic in its own
right I notice. Boom seems to be unique as it broadcasts from the homes of
its DJs no matter where in the world they are and they do play some tracks
you never hear on other play list radio stations, but we do not see beg
advertisers. I do feel sorry for the young as much of the time they just
grab the stuff offline and avoid live radio altogether. Sigh.
