I hope they finally make the leap for the hidden services to make them really hidden. A lot of the bugs and flaws concerning this topic are years old.
I have in mind that the new tor addresses should look something close to the b32 addresses on i2p. Keeping the fingers crossed...

I've read in the past comments that the devs of tor are way more
interested in anonymous clearnet browsing then they are hidden services.

I wish it were the other way around.

I know it is a very old discussion in context with tor, but
could there be some kind of influence from the parties
giving the money (mostly government institutions) ? As much
as I love the software, there are some dubious things about
the tor project, including the way they fired one of their
staff like a year ago without ever presenting evidence that
he did the things the accused him of (Jacob Appelbaum).
Still using it myself, though.

There's a strage tie between the USG and Tor Project.

here you can learn about the new generation of hidden services:
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/NextGenOnions#Howtoconnecttothetesthubfornextgenonionservices

Lets see. Still hoping for strongly improved anonymity.

some services using the new method:
Example prop224 services

You will need a Tor browser running at least tor-0.3.2.1-alpha (e.g. Tor Browser 7.5a5) to visit these:

Interesting. Nice to see some time being put into hidden service (now
onion services)
