Hi.

Not sure this is the correct way you do this...

Watching Inspector Foyle (Foyle's War in the original, I think), third
episode. First some woman's face seemed familiar, and then... Tennant is
in it! :)) (Probably no news to anyone here, but I'm happy. :) )

(Woman turned out to be Madame Pompadour from Doctor Who. Though I was
sure I had seen her somewhere else. Biography also mentions a Marple
episode, which just increases the feeling that I've seen her somewhere
entirely else, but nothing else rings any bells.)

Sorry!! Are you implying there are two separate series, "Foyle's War"
AND "Inspector Foyle"??

> third episode. First some woman's face seemed familiar,

Seems to me, British T.V. only had a limited number of Reliable Actors.
Our ABC has just started showing the series "Murder in Provence" which
stars Roger Allam who was the 'Gov', DI Fred Thursday in the series
"Endeavour".

Was that the episode were David Tennant played a 'gypsy' type character??

Aww! I didn't make THAT connection.

No idea how you got that idea.

It's called Inspector Foyle in Germany, and I think in the original it's
called Foyle's War.

Actor of USA president killed by Master in Doctor Who was/is the head of
police (or whatever it's called - that's not available in original here)
in Death in Paradise.

Inspector Poole from that series got his own series, Professor T.
(whatever that's in the original).

We do keep seeing the same faces.

Pacifist, as far as I watched that episode. Half-way through, until
windoze update in the background brought the show to its knees, and I
decided to let it do its thing and go to bed. Was certainly late enough.

Will watch rest later. :)

I cheated and looked up the cast. :)

They do the same with Midsomer Murders, which is called
"Inspector Barnaby" in Germany...

Yep. Names are often changed in countries that don't speak English,
including the USA. :-p

Similar happens in other areas. Some cars, for example, can have
different names in different countries.

They do that a lot. Like Married with Children -> A terribly nice
Family. (And 'everyone' just calls it Al Bundy. ;P )

What do they do when they change the detective in "Inspector Barnaby"?
;P

Trying to find out in what time Midsomer Murders takes place, and
failing, I guess it's current time?

Al Bundy was my hero!

They did change the detective in Midsomer Murders... they went
from Inspector Barnaby to Inspector Barnaby.

A relative as opposed to a regeneration though! ;-)

I'd assume so.

For me, Midsomer Murders has never been the same since Bergerac
left. Nettles is a great actor, it's like a different show
without him and his missus... and not forgetting the lovely
Cully.

It wasn't a problem. They've only changed the lead actor once, and they
replaced Tom Barnaby (played by John Nettles) with his cousin John
Barnaby (played by Neil Dudgeon). :-)

Current day. Hence why they've slowly changed over to driving electric
cars, etc.

Sometimes the names are changed due to there already being an existing
show with the same name. For example, "The Good Life" was changed to
"Good Neighbours" (note the letter u) because the US already had a show
called "The Good Life".

Sometimes it's simply for no good reason at all.

Some UK shows / movies that changed names when shown in America include:
- "Strike" became "C.B. Strike"
- "Spooks" became "MI-5"
- "Danger Man" became "Secret Agent"
- "Grace & Favour" became "Are You Being Served? Again"
- "Jam & Jerusalem" became "Clatterford"
- "The Fast Show" became "Brilliant"
- "Born Survivor: Bear Grylls" became "Man vs. Wild"
- "Escape to Vitory" became "Victory"
- "The 51st State" became "Formula 51"
- "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" became
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"

It does occasionally happen the other way around to. The US animated
show (and the toy range) "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" became "Teenage
Mutant Heor Turtles" in the UK and some other european countries
because "Ninja" was though to be too violent for kids. In the UK, it
has been put back these days to "Ninja".

Here's a few more examples of name changes in non-English speaking countries:
- "Game of Thrones" became "Throne Fight" in Hungary
- "Friends" became "Friends for Life" in Norway
- "Breaking Bad" became "Shoes of Satan" in Bulgaria
- "Mad Men" became "People in Manhatten" in Serbia
- "That 70s Show" became "Golden 70s" in the Czech Republic
- "House" became "Docto'rs Conscience" in Slovenia
- "Powerpuff Girls" became "Atom Girls" in Poland

It isn't just titles of shows, movies, and books either. Characters in
them are often changed as well. The Aserix and Obelix books are a good
example where many of the other characters have different names in
different languages so that the joke works better.

Ah. Shame. I haven't actually watched any of it, and am unlikely to
start now. :)

Lucky for the German title. :)

Reminds me of the new version of Miss Fisher's adventures (or whatever
it's called). I don't like the new one at all, irresponsible woman
leaves someone under a heat thingy in the hairdresser's shop. Not that
that wasn't bad enough, she goes on doing other stupid stuff. No point
in watching _that_ show.

Doubt it. Just look at how popular Hogan's Heroes is here (the Klink-is-
even-stupider-than-in-the-original dubbed version, "A Cage full of
Heroes").

Man, I could ramble on all day about what they all changed in Hogan's
Heroes. At least the actual moving pictures are still the same! :)

Back to Foyle's War; others suggested that they like "Inspector ..."
titles here, which sounds plausible. :)
