> In the early 80s I returned to the "Church" and started leading singing. Early on Christmas Day of '82 I moved a piano to the front of the church after having it tuned and had promise from my organist to accompany me for the first Mass 9. During the mass Fr. Cunningham asked me to invite a friend of his to sing. I looked for Iris Frazer, who I did not know, in the small congregation and she agreed. When I returned to my post beside my pianist she inquired where I had been. When I told her what I had been up to and her response is not printable. Iris sang so well that when Kate heard the opening of "What Child Is This", to say she was schock is an understatedment. Iris Frazer became a real gift to me and my musical journey. After mass we shared a coffee with Fr. John and I learned she would return the following March to sing Mercedes in the Edmonton Opera Production of Carmen. Over next three months I listened to many recording of Carmen. I read the libretto and three different biographies of George Bizet. I was very well prepared when March arrived and I was there for opening night and the final night. Joy Davidson was spectacular on all levels but particularly on the last night both as an actor and singer. She had recently had a baby who was back stage for nursing. Our Edmonton audience was very nervous about
> her breast falling out of her spanish/gypsy/baredshouldered top. The bright moments were many and intense. They are too many to list here. The most memorable was the conductor's attacca once Don Jose had made up his mind about Carmen and there was no need to waste heading for the finale. The orchestra, chorus and soloists all seemed to by to this sense of urgency needed as they charged toward the tragic end. I have seen it 4 times now and other productions, but none have come close to that experience. This was only the second time I had been to an Opera. When I was 13 years old my took me to hear my older brother Don Laver star in Faust. I still don't know if I have recovered from that experience of him selling his soul to the devil.
