Dalton says these interviews were conducted two days before filming started.. None of them stood out for me. I did notice that Dave refers to himself by his last name. Wonder if Jeff will as well. Also noticed a few of the outfits worn by some of the women could lead to some blurring.

The outfits that the players wear during the pre-game interviews, and for the publicity photos, are not usually what they
have with them on the island. IMO, the only outfit that was somewhat risqué was the one worn by Kenzie. All the rest
of the women were dressed in what I would consider to be "new era standard".

He used to make a big deal out of players needing to earn that privilege. A good somewhat recent example is Sarah. Not saying she didn't earn the "privilege," but in some cases the player is known by their first name and she's one of them.

I just looked at the game photos Mike Bloom posted. You're right that the interview clothes are different.

I know Jeff used to make a big deal about players having to "earn" the right
to be addressed by their last name, but I'm not sure that really stands up.
A really recent example was S43 eventual-winner Mike Gabler who, as far as I
recall, was called Gabler from the very start of the game. He didn't do
anything to earn that naming. It's also hard to say that one of the
best-known "last name only" players, John Cochran, earned being called by
his last name. As I recall, Cochran simply requested he be called that way
in his very first appearance on the show, long before anyone could really
see what he could do.

There was also always a lot of inconsistency in how Jeff decided who he
would address this way. It couldn't just be player greatness. Parvati
Shallow by any measure is one of the great players, yet I never heard her
addressed as "Shallow". I don't recall Tyson being addressed as "Apostol"
or Sandra ever being called "Diaz-Twine". I don't recall Yul ever being
addressed as "Kwon". These were all winners. Yet a marginal player like
Mike Skupin - not necessarily one of the greats - gets to be called
"Skupin". And Jonathan Penner - who never finished higher than seventh and
was more entertaining than really good, got to be called "Penner". So go
figure.

I agree. Back in the "old school" seasons, Probst would honour his favourite players
by addressing them by their last names most of the time. Examples beyond the ones
you have already identified:
-Rob Mariano
-Colby Donaldson
-Brad Culpepper
-Richard Hatch
-Andrew Savage
-Stephen Fishbach
-Mike Skupin
-Jeff Varner
-Kelley Wentworth

There are likely a few that I have forgotten, but these examples make it clear that male players were more
likely to get the "last name" treatment as opposed to women. Also, people who had played multiple seasons
were more likely to be honoured with the "last name" than were rookies. However, as you correctly pointed
out, in the "New Era", all somebody has to do is ask Probst to address him/her by the last name only, and
it will be done without complaint.

BTW, Probst did address Parvati as "Shallow" on a few occasions, but he used her first name a lot too.

Some last names just don't sound right used as a show of a greatness or are just too "messy" as in Sandra's case. Cochran doesn't look like a John so thank God they went with his last name.

I'd say the name Jeff uses is often driven by what's catchier. Gabler sounds cool. Or the player is connected to a name. Michele is one of the greats, but it would sound stupid if Jeff called her "Fitzgerald."

When did Jeff start calling Rob by "Boston Rob"? I thought it was early on.

I think KW earned the last name honor based on her campaign to play again.

If Emily plays again, do you think Jeff will call her "Flippin"? Girl's a legend despite not winning S45.

Rob has told the story before. In S4 ("Back to the Beach"), there was another guy named Robert in the cast.
In order to prevent both of them from responding to questions directed to "Rob", Probst added the "Boston"
handle to Rob Mariano's name, and the other guy was just addressed as "Rob".

I suspect that Probst viewed Kelley as an "honorary bro", hence his willingness to make her the only woman
(IIRC) who he addressed by her last name.

> If Emily plays again, do you think Jeff will call her "Flippin"?

God, I hope not. That would be as bad as "Shallow".

Thanks for the info. Yes, the two or more people with the first names casts often result in either nicknames being used or last names.

She definitely deserved the honor.

Even better would be Financial Analyst Emily Flippin.

Probst missed gold not calling Gabby by her last name

Actually, I seem to recall the other Rob was called "The General" and Boston
Rob was initially called "Rob" when they were on separate tribes. After the
merge, it must have seemed weird for Jeff to call the other guy "General" so
they had the discussion that led to the name Boston Rob. But I think that
was just a convenience for this season and would have been forgotten except
for one big thing. When Rob came back for All Stars, he was now on the same
tribe with another Rob - namely Rob Cesternino - who had dominated Survivor
the Amazon just two seasons earlier and was arguably at that point the much
better known of the two Robs (or three, if you include the General). So I
suspect that was when the Boston Rob nickname really started to click and be
used in earnest, even though Rob C actually got voted out in their first TC
together.
