After forty or so years of accessing Usenet for free, this has been
quite a learning curve for me. But watching Survivor without the
on-line discussion just wasn't going to work. :-)

I was wondering what happened to you. I was in the same boat but finally
figured it out. Then with this this place so dead I gave up posting
after the first episode. I'll do some posts for the last two episodes in
the next few days. Hopefully I can find some tweets I saw that had some
great background info.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of posts that I saw
when I finally "cracked the code" and got into alt.tv.survivor. I was
honestly expecting "crickets". If that had been the case, I would have
probably started posting on Reddit which I have been reading since the
start of S46.

What are you using to access Usenet? I ended up going with Eternal
September b/c I couldn't justify paying for how little I use Usenet.

I'm using Easynews as my Usenet provider and Thunderbird as my
NewsReader. Easynews does charge a fee, but they provide excellent
on-line support which I have really appreciated over the past couple
of days. TBH, if there had been nobody here when I finally was able
to sign in, I would have cancelled my subscription to Easynews almost
immediately.

I have been using Eternal September off and on for years with Windows Live
Mail, and now all the time since the demise of aioe. It works fairly well
and only goes off-line occasionally. I would never pay for Usenet cause
it's just not worth it.

I paid Astraweb $10 for 24.66GB of Usenet almost 15 years ago.
Today,
it says I have 24.59GB left.

Sounds right to me. I am surprised that your data cap didn't expire ages

You can use Eternal September with Windows Live Mail? I downloaded
Thunderbird and find the UI unnecessarily confusing. Would love if
outlook.com could act as a newsreader.

Yes, it works fine with Windows Live Mail, but WLM is itself no longer
supported and occasionally returns script errors when processing certain
types of mail. It should work fine with Thunderbird, but I agree that
product is annoyingly complicated and confusing. But at least it is
supported and free. Haven't used any version of Outlook in literally
decades.

I dunno - 9-10 MB of usage could be about right if all you're doing is
downloading text.

I pay $10/mo but that's for more or less unlimited binary downloads

You must be strictly doing text rather than binaries.

A couple of weeks ago I grabbed all of BBCan 11 which I'm pretty sure
was more than that altogether...I'm expecting my ISP to complain soon
(despite an allegedly unlimited account - but then they're only
delivering about 60% of the speed I'm supposed to be getting in my
plan and any time they hassle me I say so and ask about my rebate?) so
am temporarily laying low.

I'm probably going to try for For All Mankind s4 soon which is about a
world in which the Soviets beat Apollo 11 to the moon by 3 weeks which
initiates a full scale space race as opposed to the slowdown in the
shuttle era - by season 4 they're making the first Mars missions and
semi-permanent moon bases.

Thank you. The Survivor subreddit is certainly an active community which
means that
a wide variety of opinions are expressed. However, I have always felt kind of
“icky” about
the “karma points”. :-)

I post in a few non-TV subreddits. The over moderation and groupthink
kills me. Usenet alt groups might not look nice but at least you can see
and express opinions that might not be popular.

Yep, I'm also on news.eternal-september.org - works well and
free of charge.

But it is the only real Usenet group I subscribe to.

For all the tech oriented MLs Gnus/gmane is better and still
has the Usenet user experience/interface.

Maybe sometimes you miss the more wild west style of Usenet
discussion ...
