Ann Margaret Mayer died peacefully on February 5, 2022 in Ithaca, New York. She was born on August 5, 1938 in Schenectady, New York, the daughter of Harry F. Mayer and Mary (Insley) Mayer. She graduated from Clinton Central High School in 1956 and from Mount Holyoke College in 1960, after which she worked for various companies doing secretarial and technical writing. In 1964, she received her Ed.M. from Harvard and became a second grade teacher at Dame School in Medford, Massachusetts. The following year she moved to Rochester, New York to work at Chestnut Ridge Elementary School. In 1972 she began working at the Churchville-Chili Central School in New York where she taught until 1976. She became a librarian after receiving her M.L.S. from SUNY Geneseo in 1975.

She published non-fiction books for children, as well as numerous articles for children and adults. Her subjects reflect her wide-ranging curiosity: the life of Beatrix Potter, UFOs, and Dag Hammarskjöld (former secretary of the United Nations). She was an enthusiastic world traveler, with a special fondness for Amsterdam. And she was never without a cat.

Ann continued to write well into retirement; she produced several books of poems on the animals of Nepal for Nepalese school children. She found illustrators from among the children of Nepal and Great Britain, all from the confines of her room in assisted living.

From that same room she tended her flower garden and oversaw the care of the retirement center's aviaries which housed a variety of finches. She also produced countless knitted animals – from blue jays to sloths – that she gave away to the delighted children and grandchildren of family and friends. A knitted caterpillar perched on the handles of her walker.

Ann lived many years with Parkinson's disease. When this compromised her ability to knit, she created collages from found objects and magazine pictures. To the end, she remained an interesting – and interested – friend to all who spent time with her. In one of her last conversations, her visitor complained of the problem of mis-shelved library books, to which Ann replied: "Frustrating."...
