Is this anything like "Boom Boom?"

> 21. Just Like I Treat You Howlin' Wolf

This is a weak one for me, just a 5. Blues is not meant to be done this fast. My big Wolf number for this year is "I Ain't Superstitious."

> 28.. Don't Deceive Me Fats Domino

Strange, I did not have this on MP3 because it's not on the Bear Family 8 CD box set that's supposed to be complete. I do still have the original "Twistin' The Stomp" album.

I'm going with "Duke Of Earl," which I guess doesn't qualify under your rules.

That is terrible, but "Telstar" is worse for me. It's actually very irritating while "Johnny Angel" is just bad fluff.

I'm going with "That's My Pa" by Sheb Wooley, which also does not qualify under "Roger's Rules of number one singles."

The flip, of course.

Why did Black Americans like this White record so much?

Or, could it be that the 1962 R&B charts were, in effect, rubbish
as regards reflecting the taste in music of persons of color?

What determined R&B chart ranking?

Billboard's R&B charts got really fucked up starting in the late 50s when they were using stores that were selling rock and roll to teens as R&B stores. The Cash Box R&B charts were much better in the early 60s. "Hey Paula" only reached #12 on CB R&B.

It'll probably take me several days. My lists are about 7 years old. I spent about 4 hours updating this one and wasn't that thorough.

So did you find anything of interest, or just a bunch of Sinatra you didn't care about. I was surprised Roger warmed up to my Big Sambo favorite and you picked up on the Danny White song.

Yes, I downloaded these items:

BB King - Blues At Midnight
Both sides of the Dukays
Harvey
Ikettes
Interludes
Longhair
Ray & Darchaes
Utopians

A few I knew but didn't have, and several I did not know before. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean about "warmed up" to the Big Sambo number---its an excellent record that I bought at the time from the old Transat shop in London when the label still said "BIG SAMBO" instead of the "Big Sam" on later releases

Just remember nominating for the 1962 battle and you indicating you preferred the flip side. My copy also said Big Sambo. He got in trouble with the Southern Leadership Council for the name and his performance and the record was banned in the US just as it was taking off. It reached top 5 in Phoenix before that happened. Always been a favorite of mine.

Great to see this one not only on the list, but high on it. It's always been a big favorite of mine, but it doesn't get much respect here.

Did not have this. I don't think I even knew he was on Kent, how did that happen?

> 72. Any Other Way - William Bell

I had this as 1961, but '62 seems right.

> 77. Tricky Dicky - Richie Barrett

Never heard of this, don't like it.

This should be "A Losing Battle."

I have this in 1953, when it was recorded, since it was released on an oldies package here rather than on a contemporary release.

> 106. Alley Music - Hound Dog Taylor

Did not know this.

> 108. Tore Up - Smiley Lewis

Forgot all about this, it's just okay.

> 109. Hello Little School Girl - Smokey Smothers

Had this on CD, never MP3ed it before. just okay.

This guy has got to be the most underrated artist of our era. There's just so many good fucking records, and I keep finding more good ones that I don't have.

> 115. Down The Road - Dootones

Did not know it, pretty good for a 60s doo wop.

> 120. Lucy Lee - Lloyd George

Did not know it, just decent.

I always figured they set the Kent label up to issue older Modern and RPM tracks but a few new things did appear on the label

Both sides on this were H-U-G-E on the UK r&b circuit and were picked up by loads of UK music acts at the time. Most of the groups aroud at the time from The Beatles on down picked up on "Some Other Guy" and "Tricky Dicky" was no slouch either

OK I'll remedy that

I don't really see any difference. Vee Jay certainly marketed the LP in Billboard etc as a "new release"

I can't disagree with that analysis

Amazingly this guy was "Lonzo" from the country act "Lonzo & Oscar"

All greatest hits and and collection albums are "new releases," but are not released looking to break into the contemporary market and become a hit. I'm not gonna place some real old unissued track in the year that some collection package was released. Tell me, do you have "Love's All I'm Puttin' Down" by the Spiders in 1992 when it was released? It was a new release, so based on what you're saying it has to go in 1992.
