THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

DEACON ANDY GRIFFITH (Capitol 2693; F-2693)

“WHAT IT WAS, WAS FOOTBALL” (2:51) [Charles BMI—Griffith]
‘WHAT IT WAS, WAS FOOTBALL” Part 2 (2:33) [ Charles BMI—Griffith ]

Capitol Records gets hold of another comical recitation disk that could outsell their million record version of Johnny Standley’s “It’s In The Book.” It’s a hilarious comedy disk tagged “Wat It Was, Was Football” featuring Deacon Andy Griffith as he tells of an experience in a small football town. He recites the tale in a deep Southern drawl and the dialogue is the greatest. The platter should enjoy a tremendous sale and eventually reach the juke boxes. The back of the disk is the second part of the two-sided tale that gets funnier as it goes along. There’s no reason why this waxing shouldn’t follow in the footsteps of “It’s In The Book” and “St. George And The Dragonet.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

BILLY WARD AND HIS DOMINOES (Federal 12162)

“MY BABY’S 3D” (2:04) [Ward Marks BMI—Billy Ward]
“UNTIL THE REAL THING COMES ALONG” (2:45) [Chappell ASCAP—Holiner, Nichols, Cahn, Chaplin, Freeman]

Billy Ward and His Dominoes, currently riding with one of the top
tunes in the nation, “Rags To Riches,” and with a big Yule offering,
“Christmas In Heaven,” now bids for another hit with his two sider
offering, “My Baby’s 3D” and “Until The Real Thing Comes Along.”
The former is a chuckley quick beat description of the “Monroish”
attributes of his eye filling gal. Tells the fellas to stop winking their
eyes ’cause he’s got her under lock and key! The flip is that beautiful
slow paced standard that could make the mark in the ever growing
popularity of the group in the pop field.

THE CASH BOX RHYTHM 'N BLUES
SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

LITTLE WALTER (Checker 786)

“YOU’RE SO FINE” (2:41) [Arc Music BMI—W. Jacobs]
“LIGHTS OUT” (2:39) [Arc Music BMI—W. Jacobs]

Two fine sides by Little Walter should break for him and add additional
laurels for the lad who can do wonders with a harmonica. The upper
deck, “You’re So Fine,” is a quick beat bounce with Walter singing out
the lyrics effervescently. His bubbly reading plus the intriguing sounds
provided by his mouth organ make this a potent platter. Walter sings
of his gal who is so fine he wants to love her all the time. The under
portion, “Lights Out,” is a slow, intriguing mood piece expertly and
excitingly waxed by Little Walter. This side is an instrumental
projecting the artist’s expertness on the harmonica.

THE CASH BOX RHYTHM 'N BLUES
SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE CRICKETS featuring DEAN BARLOW (Jay Dee 785)

“CHANGING PARTNERS’ (2:41) [Porgie BMI—Darion, Coleman]
“YOUR LOVE” (2:40) [Beacon—Glen Gibson]

The Crickets come up with their strongest offering since “You’re
Mine” in the latest, a current pop hit, “Changing Partners.” The
group, featuring the stellar voice of Dean Barlow, treats the slow,
lovely waltz to a tender and heart warming reading. A potent
arrangement of the lilting love tune aids immeasurably. This disk
should again put The Crickets high in the charts. The flip, “Your
Love, is a fast moving Latin tempo item rhythmically presented.
The boys do a fine job on a light and infectious love tune.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JOE HOUSTON (Modern 917)

“BLOWIN’ CRAZY” (2:41) [Modern BMI-Houston, Taub]
Joe Houston and his aggregation etches a wild quick beat jump instrumental with a torrid sax job accompanied by ork shouts of “blow-blow-blow.” An exciting side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0wOQl75o7g

“G0IN’ CRAZY” (2:39) [Modern BMI—Houston, Taub]
middle tempo rhythmic bounce instrumental again featuring the sax.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feF6BgeKSlw

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TINY GRIMES (Red Robin 123)

“JUICY FRUIT” (2:45) [Bob-Dan Music BMI-Grimes]
An in triguing sax instrumental that would make a solid piece of pop material. Should show up strong in the boxes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fagaoaNGiNY

“SECOND FLOOR REAR” (2:50) [Bob-Dan Music BMI—Grimes]
Flip is an easy to listen to treatment of a middle tempo instrumental. Sax again featured instrument with good guitar support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YBlm7pMl0c

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARLIE (Little Jazz) Ferguson (Apollo 817)

“2:30 BREAK” (2:10) [Bess Music BMI—Ferguson]
Charlie Ferguson and his ork etch a rocking and
exciting fast moving item which showcases the
Ferguson sax.

“SO MUCH OF A LITTLE BIT” [(2:54) Bess Music BMI—Pauling]
The flip is a middle tempo item with an unnamed
gal handling the vocal end. Strong part of the disk
is Ferguson’s dynamic sax.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBqlyyQEeAQ

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROY MILTON (Specialty 480)

“BABY, YOU DON’T KNOW” (2:14) [Bar BMI—Milton]
Roy Milton sadly sings that his gal doesn’t know his
mind. That when he laughs, he laughs to keep from
crying. Milton puts lots of feeling into his handling of
the lyrics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSyGgt_ZgyQ

“I STOOD BY” (2:49) [Bar BMI —Milton]
Roy sings a sad slow blues softly and with the proper
emotion. His poor heart broke as he stood by and
watched her leave with someone else. A very strong
platter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpdZIWbLlto

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SAM BUTERA (RCA Victor 20-5545)

“SHINE THE BUCKLE” (1:58) [Campbell Music BMI—Smith]
Sam Butera blows a slow mysterious
mood piece with some wonderful and
subtly exciting sax sounds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpKtJB53xgE

“WAILIN’ WALK” (2:30) [Campbell Music BMI—Smith]
Butera intrigues with more of same on the reverse deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojt171rDFds

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLARENCE “BON TON” GARLOW (Flair 1021)

“ROUTE 90’” (2:40) [Rene ASCAP—Garlow Rene]
Garlow sings out the story of a train ride set to a
fast beat. Solid ork backing helps make this a
potent deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwJ5TE2vfPU

“CRAWFISHIN’” (2:40) [Rene ASCAP—Rene]
A rhythmic quick tempo ditty infectiously read
by Garlow. Ork and, vocal treatment similar to
the top deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=votTMo6iYPw

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MR. “GOGGLE EYES” AUGUST (Duke 117)

“0 WHAT A FOOL” (2:35) [Lion BMI—August]
“Goggle Eyes” August complainingly shouts out the middle beat story of what a fool he was and how he was taken in by the gal. Disk proves “Goggle Eyes” a strong piece of talent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKUmTpTzQDo

"PLAY THE GAME” (2:52) [Lion BMI—August]
Flip is a slow blues with August coming through solidly and supported by a fine guitar. He heartbrokenly advises the gal to “Play the Game” wherever she is.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOBBY HALL and THE KINGS (Jax 320)

“LOVE NO ONE” (2:41) [Congress BMI—M. Shad, B. Hall]
Bobby Hall and The Kings do a solid job on a slow rhythmic blues item.
Hall does an emotional lead putting lots of feeling into his delivery. A
good deck.

both sides - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0kjpqZjL5A

“SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE” (2:38) [Belle, Leonard, Rhodes, Prima]
The boys come up with a smart and tender reading of the slow, pretty l
ove tune.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASTELLES (Grand 101)

“MY GIRL AWAITS ME” (2:41) [Slotkin, Vance]
The Castelles dish up a slow light hearted bounce with love lyrics in smart style and with a different sound. Could make some noise in the boxes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXp2SOhAboQ

“SWEETNESS” (2:39) [Anthony]
The flip is a quick beat item sung with a spiritual flavor. A lively jump.
