JULY 19, 1958

https://www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/50s/1958/CB-1958-07-19.pdf

FOUR PREPS (Capitol 4023)

“SUMMER TIME LIES” (2:05) [E. H. Morris ASCAP—Loring, Hood]
“LAZY SUMMER NIGHT” (2:08) [Rooney-Spina ASCAP—Spina]

With two consecutive top ten- ners under their belts
(“26 Miles” & “Big Man”) the Four Preps offer a winning
coupling designed specifically for summer programming.
Both ends “Summer Time Lies” and “Lazy Summer Night”
are soft, soothing romantic ballads dis- playing the quartet’s
beautiful harmony. And both sides sport lyrics for the teenage
disk buying set. The two decks could blossom into summer standards.

SAM COOKE (Keen 2006)

“WIN YOUR LOVE FOR ME” (2:26) [Hennosa BMI—Cooke]
“LOVE SONG FROM ‘HOUSEBOAT'" (2:01) [Famous ASCAP—Livingston, Evans]

Sam Cooke is headed for the top
ten once again with a great new
side that is far-and-away his best
effort since “You Send Me”. It’s a
fabulous multiple track vocal per-
formance of a potent latin beat
ballad dubbed “Win Your Love For
Me”. Beautiful cha-cha dance item
with a haunting melody that re-
minds the listener of “Cindy Oh
Cindy”. Side has the “smash”
sound. Flip is a pretty ballad from
sam cooke the pic “Houseboat”.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MARTY ROBBINS (Columbia 41208)

"SHE WAS ONLY SEVENTEEN” (2:35) [Acuff-Rose BMI—Robbins]
“SITTIN’ IN A TREE HOUSE” (2:30) [Famous ASCAP—David, Bacharach]

One of the best teenage ballads to hit the market since “Young Love”
is the Marty Robbins composition “She Was Only Seventeen” which
he sings on his latest Columbia release. Wonderful tale about two
youngsters in love. Lyrics and melody are just great. Could be bigger
than the songster’s “White Sport Coat”. “Sittin’ In A Tree’ is a light,
refreshing summer romancer with a colorful bounce and happy overall
sound. Cute side that could also make the grade.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROYAL TEENS (ABC-Paramount 9945)

“HARVEY’S GOT A GIRL FRIEND” (2:05) [Admiration BMI—Gaudio, Qualiano, Dalton Austin]
The familiar theme children use to tease others, is elaborated upon and
magnified into a rock and roll novelty that the teenagers should enjoy.
Side’s got a good rockin’ heat, handclapping, and an overall commercial
sound. Much of the side is instrumental.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIzXenXtWSg

“HANGIN’ AROUND” (2:18) [Admiration BMI — Medeiros, Melillo]
This end is a slow rock-a-bal- lad treated to an ok delivery by the crew.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LITTLE ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS (End 1027)

“TEARS ON MY PILLOW” [Vanderbuilt & Bonnie ASCAP Bradford, Lewis]
Little Anthony, a young lad with a clean-cut, ear-pleasing sound,
leads the Imperials thru an excellent rock-a-ballad opus. Above
par composition that becomes prettier with each new listen.
Watch this one. It’s got a winning sound. Anthony is terrific.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r9iyWkvC1k

“TWO PEOPLE IN THE WORLD” [Real Gone BMI—Barrett, Wright]
Another good R & R ballad with Little Anthony wandering vocally
thru the high register.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BETTY MADIGAN (Coral 62007)

“DANCE EVERYONE DANCE’’ (2.23) [Bourne ASCAP—Danoff]
Betty Madigan delivers a spirited pop rendition of a favorite
Hebrew chant,!“Hava Nagila”. An exciting, galloping tempo
item different from the run-of-the-mill merchandise heard
today.Lively pick-me-up that makes your;toes tap. Could
be a hearty moneymaker for the songstress.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLSwXgmm8-w

“MY SYMPHONY OF LOVE” (2:44) [Rhyme & Rhythm ASCAP —Wayne, Reichner]
A chorus assists the canary again, this time as she chants
a dramatic love song. Exciting change in tempos adds color
to this!strong performance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlWzX10AYUI

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOMMY EDWARDS (MGM 12688)

“IT’S ALL IN THE GAME’” (2:25) [Remick ASCAP—Dawes, Sigman]
Tommy Edwards, who hit it big with this number some
eight or nine years ago, re-fashions the beautiful oldie
in today’s R & R ballad tempo. And once again it comes
over wonderfully. Superb tune handled warmly by the
soft-toned stylist.Could happen all over again. Watch it
closely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubsb25Ckkbg

“PLEASE LOVE ME FOREVER” (2:32) [Ricky BMI—Malone]
The same smooth rock-a-ballad tempo prevails on this
end as Tommy softly interprets another good ballad.
Chorus and string back drop is lovely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18Bw5XRBtpc

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GENE VINCENT & BLUE CAPS (Capitol 4010)

“YES I LOVE YOU, BABY” (2:04) [Central Songs BMI—Vincent, Peek, Lipscomb, Facenda]
Vincent and his Blue Caps high tail it thru a good rocker
with a torrid bea tand a money sound. Exciting vocal work
by the lead and his talented side-kicks. Watch this one closely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtB6bchh6EM

“ROCKY ROAD BLUES” (2:07) [Peer International BMI—Monroe]
Another hot foot stomper that drives from the first groove right
thru to the last. Exciting dance deck with hand-clapping, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl1FT1TtD08

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RUTH McFADDEN (Tiara 6117)

“YOU MUST COME IN AT THE DOOR” (2:16) [Bourne ASCAP —Skylar]
Ruth McFadden hands in an exciting interpretation
of a good gospel handclapper. Spirited performance
of a colorful number all age groups will enjoy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRX81BFJKhE

“AT THE CROSSROADS” (2:33) [Harvest ASCAP—Muskin, Harris]
A dramatic rock-a-ballad about a moment of decision
in her love life, is chanted with emotion by the lark.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cash Box Sleeper of the Week

DEL VIKINGS (Mercury 71345)

"YOU CHEATED" (2:22) [Balcones BMI—Burch]
"PRETTY LITTLE THINGS CALLED GIRLS’’ (2:05) [Gil BMI—Clowney, Howard]

The Del-Vikings are back on the winning track once again with
a big new rock and roll ballad that should splash their names all
across the charts in short order. The title of. the song that should
turn the trick is “You Cheated”, a dramatic tale about an unfaithful
lover. Boys are in top form. “Pretty Little Things Called Girls” is a good
finger-snapper also tailored for teen tastes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JAN & ARNIE (Arwin 111)

“BONNIE LOU” (2:08) [Daywin BMI—Berry, Ginsburg, Altfeld) ]
“GAS MONEY” (2:20) [Daywin BMI—Berry, Ginsburg, Altfeld)]

Jan & Arnie, the two lads who
took the country by storm with
their “Jennie Lee” smash, have two
exciting new rock and roll morsels
for the kids. “Gas Money” is a side
that .should hit home. It’s a cute
jump beat novelty about teenagers
who can’t garner up enough cash
to buy gas for their car. “Bonnie
Lou” is a new edition of “Jennie
Lee”. A swinging affair featuring
the bah-bah-bah intro that made
their initial hit such a sensation.
Kids should dig both sides.

The Cash Box Sleeper of the Week

BOBBY FREEMAN (Josie 841)

“BETTY LOU GOT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES” (2:20) [Benell & [Benell & Clockus BMI—Freeman]
“STARLIGHT” (2:44) Cloekus BMI—Freeman]

Bobby Freeman, who skyrocketed to stardom aboard one of this
year’s biggest hits “Do You Wanna Dance”, comes right back with
a powerful new coupling that should follow in the initial hit’s footsteps.
“Betty Lou Got A New Pair Of Shoes” is an exciting new rocker that has
the songster belting from the heels. Torrid teen stuff. Equally strong is
the “Starlight” side. A slow moody ballad with a haunting guitar backdrop
showcasing the versatile artist’s falsetto vocalizing. Hot pairing. Take your pick.
