Jo Stafford was one of the better white song thrushes of the era and had several records I like.Joni is not in the same class.

Sue Thompson's vocal is too twee for me (as on her later stuff)

I can't think of any pre-soul R&B record that's "enhanced" by Violins. Sometimes they are more tolerable than other times based on hos they're being used, like as the lead instrument at the start of "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" or "Kiddio." They are especially bad when used in an arpeggio like at the start of "There Goes My Baby" or just as the background behind a singer IMO.

There plenty of country that is enhanced by violins, but those are "fiddles," not violins.

I never shut myself off from "There Goes My Baby." It's on my 1959 list, just nowhere near where it appears on your 1959 list. It's #178 for me. Despite the putrid violins it still gets a 7, although a lower 7 than the better flip side, "Oh My Love."

I grew up with the Duprees version, and dimly remembered Jo Stafford.
When I first heard the Orioles version it hit me like a thunderbolt.
It's an 8 for me. More recently I heard Joni James's original, which I
would describe as "decent" or "listenable" --a 6.

I think you're onto something: Samp hates Jubilee records.
