“RAGS TO RICHES” (2:40) [Saunders—ASCAP]
“HERE COMES THAT HEARTACHE AGAIN” (2:58) [United—ASCAP]

it looks like he has it in a thrilling- version of a ballad labelled “Rags To Riches.”
Tony sings every word right from the heart. But adding to the excitement and
good quality of the platter is an unusual and zestful orchestration by Percy Faith
and the orchestra. The beat for the backing in not the type you would expect to
find behind a balladeer, but it’s really exciting. Could be a smash hit. On the
under side Tony delivers a sentimental ballad labeled “Here Comes That Heart-
ache Again.” His rendition carries a load of feeling. Another beautiful reading.
Keep an eye on the top half. It should be all over the boxes in short order.

THE MARVELEERS (Derby 829; 45-829)

“ONE-SIDED LOVE AFFAIR” (2:12) [Music Hall-ASCAP]
A terrific tune that’s presented to a lilting beat is belted out by the impressive
and exciting voices of the Marveleers. Their rugged harmony is the stuff that’s
selling today. Fine lead.

“FOR THE LONGEST TIME” (2:26) [Broadway-ASCAP]
More of the boys’ commercial harmony is demonstrated on this end as they flow
over a pretty ballad with a moderate tempo. Their sound is vibrant.

“I SEE THE MOON” (2:15) [Plymouth-ASCAP]
Assisted by the David Rhodes Orchestra, The Mariners work on an interesting
and unusual number with a sermon like air, yet the spiritually flavored piece
gets the rinky backing of piano. Odd item.

“I JUST WANT YOU” (2:30) [Merion Music]
Here the boys offer a better demonstration of their talent as they shuffle through
a catchy ditty. The barber-shop type of harmony is appealing.

Percy Faith backs Rosey on another re-release that helped make her a
top star. Platter is too well remembered to catch again.

THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

JULIUS LA ROSA (Cadence 1232; 45-1232)

“EH, CUMPARI” (2:24) [Crescent Music]
“TILL THEY’VE ALL GONE HOME” (2:24) [E. H. Morris—ASCAP]

Ever adding fans to his following, Julius La Rosa comes through with two new sides
that oughta add many more to the already large aggregation. On one end the young
artist sends up a ditty that oughta take the country by storm. It’s a cute happy item
labeled “Eh, Cumpari” that Julius sings in Italian with all the color and amusing quality
that the language holds. The tune has the basic idea of “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”
where more and more is added onto the song as it goes along. Here Julius sings about
various instruments of an orchestra and imitates their sounds adding on another one
after each chorus. It’s real catchy. His fans will go wild about it. Flip is a slow pretty
waltz dubbed “Till They’ve All Gone Home” that features the youngster in a romantic
style. The contrast of each side should make wonderful programming. Archie Bleyer
does a great backing job on both ends.

TERESA BREWER (Coral 61043; 9-61043)

“TOO YOUNG TO TANGO” (2:24) [ Aberbach—BMI ]

Teresa Brewer who’s doing a bang up job on her summertime TV show
comes up with two sides that look like solid smashes for the thrush. In
her lively pert voice, Tessie belts out a fast moving ditty that bounces
along at a terrific pace. She puts all the oomph she can gather into this
cute ditty. Her vibrant voice really does wonders with “Ricochet.” Adding
a great deal to this handclapping item is a rocking orchestration by Jack
Pleis and his crew. The lower end is another novelty that brings out all
the sweetness in Teresa. The tune is a cute colorful number with a Latin
tango beat. Every note that the artist belts out just seems to tingle. Both
sides have got the goods. One or both of them should click in the near
future.

A gay bouncer with a Latin backing is treated with style by the persuasive
voice of Pat Boone. He puts that extra something into the number. Ork in
the backdrop has a Lombardo sound.

“MY HEART BELONGS TO YOU” (2:24) [Babb Music]
Pat sings with that convincing tenderness as he offers a pretty tune with a
rhumba backdrop. He treats the number with ease.

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

FAYE ADAMS (Herald 416)

“SHAKE A HAND” (2:39) [Herald—BMI]
“I’VE GOTTA LEAVE YOU” (2:41)

Faye Adams etches a slow swaying lilt titled, “Shake A Hand,” that is
definitely going to be a big one. The tune has a flavor that will appeal
to all fields, but especially to the majority who have attended churches
and listened to fervent and exciting exhortations by the clergy. The
theme of the disk, “Shake A Hand,” is the act of brotherhood and good
feeling as the audience leaves the church and shake hands all around.
While not a religious item, the treatment has just a touch of the spiritual
kick. The tune is good and the Adams vocal top drawer. Has already cre-
ated excitement in the trade and ops can’t miss with this disk. Reverse
deck, “I’ve Gotta Leave You,” is a quick beat belt. Good, but not unusual.
Top deck is definitely the one to tie on to.

SAVANNAH CHURCHILL (Decca 28836)

“SHAKE A HAND” (2:44) [Herald—BMI]
“SHED A TEAR” (2:45) [Motion—BMI]

Savannah Churchill goes Rhythm and Blues with a great piece of
material, “Shake A Hand,” and Savannah gives it an emotional and
lush vocal treatment that bids fair to give Decca it’s biggest selling
r & b platter in many many moons. In picking the Churchill version,
and the Adams platter reviewed to the left, we offer two slightly dif-
ferent versions. The Churchill version is tender, warm and well done,
but it differs slightly in that it is more on the rhythm and blues kick
with a possible lapover to the pop field. The under plate “Shed A Tear”
is the Savannah Churchill of recent years. Her treatment of the slow
ballad is more for the pop audience. She’s good, as usual, as she lan-
guidly sings the tender romantic lyrics.

“CRAWDAD HOLE” (2:32) [ Progressive—BMI

Joe Turner sings this one like he’s having one heck of a good time
and he is able to transfer that feeling to the listener as he excitingly
delivers, “Honey Hush.” He tells off his yackety yack fern. Her water
works no longer move him as he tells her she is nothing but an alley
cat. Tune is a rooker with Turner giving it a merry ride. This deck de-
fies you to sit still while listening. To borrow a line from the current
hit “C’est Si Bon” “Crazy, No?”. The under lid, “Crawdad Hole,” is a
slow beat bounce infectiously chanted by Turner who tells the tale of
his fishing hole gone dry. One strong vote cast from this comer for
“Honey Hush.”
