THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

JIM LOWE (Dot 15407; 45-15407)

“MAYBELLENE” [Arc BMI—Berry]
“RENE LA RUE” [Trinity BMI—Carey, Lowe]

The Dot label has been coming through with flying colors on its pop covers
of rhythm and blues hits, and is presently sitting right up near the top with
Pat Boone’s hit “Ain’t That A Shame.” On the label’s latest release, Jim Lowe
jumps on another hot r & b tune “Maybellene” and sends it across in top form.
The tune is a beaty, fast-moving, wordy novelty and the original r & b record
is breaking strongly into pop, Lowe did very well with his first Dot pressing
“Close The Door” and should do even bigger things with this deck. A hot piece
of material to watch closely. Bottom half, “Rene La Rue” is an exciting chant
with a western flavor. Has that “Gambler’s Guitar” sound. Watch the top half.
Looks big.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARLINE ARTHUR (RCA Victor 20-6204; 47-6204)

“HONEY BUN” (2:12) [Trinity BMI—Hicks]
Country songstress Charline Arthur has a strong contender for pop honors
in this cute rhythm novelty. Thrush really lets loose on the vocal. Terrific
deck for country field too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2R2tV079ZQ

“KISS THE BABY GOODNIGHT” (2:15) [Lowery BMI—Welch]
This side is better suited for the country market. It’s a light lilting ditty
capably handled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

CLYDE McPHATTER (Atlantic 1070)

“HOT ZIGGITY” (2:32) [Progressive BMI—Winfield Scott]
“EVERYONE’S LAUGHING” (2:51) [Progressive BMI—Winfield Scott]

Clyde McPhatter makes his single debut with a two sides that have strong hit
potential. In Clyde’s first venture without the support of his Drifters, he sings
a driving item, “Hot Ziggity”—a spirited number that never stops jumping from
the opening bar. Clyde belts it in almost jubilee fashion and the product is alive
with crackling electric sparks. The coupler, “Everyone’s Laughing”, is a slow, dra-
matic story of a lost love. McPhatter’s individual vocal styling is very much in e-
vidence in this side. The jump is for both sexes, but “Everyone’s Laughing” is
just for the fern teeners. It will tear them apart.

THE CASH BOX SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

THE MARIGOLDS (Excello 2061)

“LOVE YOU-LOVE YOU-LOVE YOU” (2:50) [Excellorec BMI—Bragg]
“TWO STRANGERS” (2:34) [Excellorec BMI—Robert S. Riley]

The Marigolds follow “Rollin’ Stone” with a driving middle beat, melodically familiar,
that should prove to be a strong successor to their previous recording. The group
rocks the happy tune with zest and sparkle that imparts a lively appeal. Deck should
grab off some quick action in both the boxes and over the counter. The flip, “Two
Strangers”, is an abrupt change of pace. It is a slow, solemn, dramatic tune softly
chanted. It is a moody lyric that is a direct contrast to the happy, driving spirit of
the “Love You” side. The tune is well per- formed—but we feel the buying action will
be directed towards “Love You-Love You-Love You”.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEE WILLIE WAYNE (Imperial X5355)

“TRAVELIN’ MOOD” (2:15) [Commodore BMI—J. Wayne]
Wee Willie Wayne sings and whistles an intriguing country blues.
It is an unusual mood item that could take off with strength.
Watch this one carefully.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2XtgKePe6w

“I REMEMBER” (2:08) [Commodore BMI—Wayne]
Wayne sings a weeper country blues of slow tempo and handles
it well. Singer has a good style that brings out the best in a tune.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE “5” ROYALES (King 4819)

“DO UNTO YOU” (2:55) [Franlin BMI—Lowman Pauling]
The “5” Royales blend a slow light bouncer with romantic lyrics.
The group treats it softly and disk comes off ok.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv8daTF3Xbk

"WOMEN ABOUT TO MAKE ME GO CRAZY” (2:50) [Franlin BMI —Lowman Pauling]
The “5” Royales bounce merrily on the flip. An infectious middle
beat jump with a driving tempo. Should grab some action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSJ7n_7GKAk

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE ROVERS / THE GAYLARKS (Music City 792)

“WHOLE LOT OF LOVE” (2:46) [Rhythm-Rovers, Dobard]
The Rovers chant a melodic slow blues ballad smoothly.
Group works well together and wax an easy to absorb
item tho material is just average.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n9zhiHY_6w

“TELL ME DARLING” (2:55) [Rhythm — Dobard]
The group etches a slow beat rhythmic jump side with
romantic lyrics. Deck comes off the stronger side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni7EFC6ONxk

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASANOVAS (Apollo 477)

“PLEASE BE MY LOVE” (2:32) [Bess BMI—Samuels, Stowe]
The Casanovas come up with a strong item in this quick beat ditty.
The group delivers with an appealing sound and the tune is better
than average. Ok deck that could stir up some action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCWh3TpVXPs

“I DON’T WANT YOU TO GO” (2:51) [Bess BMI—Mayfield]
The boys sing a pretty ballad that comes off well. Lead does a fine
job on the melodic tune. Good coupler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaI7MtZ-A40

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CORONETS (Groove 0116)

“THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO” [Paramount Roy Rogers ASCAP —Dale Evans]
The Coronets come up with the first R & B version of the hit pop tune. The
group handles it well and the offering could catch a good piece of action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcr76_OQr1M

“HUSH” (2:38) [Pennant BMI Griggs]
The Coronets sing sweetly as they offer a slow ballad pretty in subdued
manner. Deck however, fails to come off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mI-qrU9Z5U

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOU MAC (Blue Lake 114)

“SLOW DOWN” (2:41) [Lake BMI—McClinton, Call]
Lou Mac swings a middle beat jump ditty with good feeling.
Tune is happy and the deck is good juke box material.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW0bccnjQ78

“BABY” (2:42) [Lake BMI—McCall]
Lou Mac etches a slow blues here and in portions she stylizes
like Eartha Kitt. Ok side—tho not as commercial as the upper
deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4E18zGAbbk

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. B. LENORE (Parrot 814)

“MAMA YOUR DAUGHTER IS GOING TO MISS ME” (2:20) [BMI Lenore]
J. B. Lenore continues the “Mama” series with this latest quick beat effort. He’s
leaving daughter in this latest chapter of a story that has been continuing for
the past couple of years. Based on the apparent strong saleability of the series,
this one will no doubt continue to rack up good sales.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxJ7uuVoHKA

“WHAT HAVE I DONE” (2:43) [BMI Lenore]
Lenore chants a slow, sorrowful blues on the reverse side. Effective hunk of
moody wax.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jASCcWK_pVg

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SONNY JONES (Chart 601)

"CAN'T YOU SEE" (2:32) [Sheryl BMI—M. Stone]
Sonny Jones and Chart make their double debut with a familiar melodic bouncer
that rocks along in good style. An auspicious start that could get the label going
first crack out of the box. Good material and strong' vocal effort.

“MY BABY’S CRYING” (2:10) [Sherlyn BMI — Stone, Jones] Jones wails a slow rhythmic southern
blues. Ok treatment of an average

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILLIE DIXON (Checker 822)

“WALKING THE BLUES” (2:41) [Dupree, Bear]
Dixon does the staccato novelty currently happening and could catch a piece
of the available business. His version is good a could offer strong competition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6RavtCBdDk

“IF YOU’RE MINE” (2:39) BMI—-Dixon]
Dixon sings an original piece of material on the flip. Good arrangement of a
repetitious and strong beat.
