GENE VINCENT (Capitol 3450; F-3450)

“BE-BOP-A-LULA” (3:01) [Lowery BMI—Davis, Vincent]
“WOMAN LOVE” (3:00) [Central BMI—Rhodes, Reynolds]

Gene Vincent makes an exciting debut on the Capitol label with
a powerhouse of a tune that could do for him what “Heartbreak
Hotel” and “Blue Suede Shoes” did for Elvis Presley and Carl Per-
kins. The artist sings in the rock and roll- country fashion, and
with the aid of some thrilling echo effects, really rocks the house
delivering “Be-Bop-A-Lula.” It’s an emotional performance with a
big driving beat enhanced by some swinging guitar work. The song
is already breaking and should keep soaring. The lower lid “Woman
Love” is a similar item aimed at the rock and roll market. Keep an
eye on the upper lid.

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

THE NUTMEGS (Herald 475)

“KEY TO THE KINGDOM” (2:30) [Angel Music BMI—Goodman]
“GIFT O’ GABBIN WOMAN” (2:05) [Angel Music BMI—Olive, Cheely]

The Nutmegs make their bid for a warm weather hit with a slow paced blues ballad,
“Key To The Kingdom (of your heart).” The Nutmegs handle the tuneful pleaser with
a smooth working rendition, teaming like a well fitted jig-saw puzzle. It is an easy to
listen to side that grows on you with each new hearing. The kids should find this right
up their alley. The flip, “Gift O’ Gabbin Woman,” takes care of the other musical need
of the adolescent. Having soothed with their reading of the mellow, romantic “Key,”
the Nutmegs take off on a hard hitting, driving jump number that the kids can exhaust
themselves to. For the charts it’s “Key To The Kingdom.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JERRY McCAIN (Excello 2081)

“RUN UNCLE JOHN! RUN” (2:24) [Excellorec BMI—J.McCain]
McCain does a follow up to “Long Tall Sally” and the humorous twist,
the timeliness of it, and the excellent job the chanter does gives the
deck a chance to do a solid job sales- wise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMPrWv4d7M8

“THINGS AIN’T RIGHT” (2:46) [Excellorec BMI—J. McCain]
Jerry McCain wails a southern slow beat blues in good style. The deck,
not as strong as the “Run” side, offers a good coupling. This side is for
the southern markets.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SPIDERS with Chuck Carbo (Imperial 1055)

“A-1 IN MY HEART” (2:20) [Reeve BMI—Bartholomew, King]
The Spiders and Chuck Carbo team up for a middle beat jump. A flavory
item describing how he feels about his baby. Good deck. Watch it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-6Fjw4tVIo

“DEAR MARY” (2:35) [Reeve BMI—Bartholomew, King]
The Spiders drift through a tender ballad with a swinging lilt that captivates.
Melodic, tasty and ear pleasing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GUITAR SLIM (Atco 6072)

“DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS” (2:22) [Progressive
BMI—Richard] Guitar Slim sings a slow paced southern blues with great
feeling. The deck captures the “Slim” manner of selling and it should do
well mainly in the southern markets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr0TW98bIGY

“OH YEAH” (2:12) [Progressive
BMI—Jones] Slim swings on this deck with a fast paced rhythmic wailer
that moves. It is a pulsator that could catch on in the northern as well
as southern markets. Two good decks that bear watching.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CASTELLES (Atco 6069)

“HAPPY AND GAY” (2:54) [Progressive BMI—Grant, Anthony, Taylor, Scott]
The Castelles do a better than average job on a quick beat jump ditty
with a light feeling. The lads are feeling their oats and bounce through
the spirits lifter with verve. Happy wax.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W9kFPtK_q4

“HEY BABY BABY” (2:52) [Progressive BMI—Grant]
The Castelles offer another quick beat effort with an effusive treatment.
Two sides for those who want their music to go. Treatment has a number
of captivating twists. Could do things if given the exposure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MONTEREYS (Teenage 1001)

“TRAIN WHISTLE BLUES” (2:38) [Regent ASCAP—White, Stevenson]
The Montereys bounce through a middle beat blues with good effect.
The group on the Teenage label offer strong etching that given the
proper exposure could make some noise.

“SOMEONE LIKE YOU” (2:41) [Sylvia BMI—White, Epps]
The Montereys glide through this slow paced pretty with a very effective
approach. It is a lovely item that bears very close watching. We think it
can make good progress where offered. Stay with it. It has sleeper potential.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARLIE FEATHERS (Meteor 5032)

“TONGUE TIED JILL” (1:55) [Met Publ. BMI—J. Chastain, J. Huffman]
Charlie Feathers rocks out a quick beat offering in the Southern vein
with a country flavoring. Deck comes off in good style and with the
current trend in this direction, assisted by a couple of good vocal
gimmicks, the deck could stir up good action where exposed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieeJlvlpY74

“GET WITH IT” (1:55) [Met Publ. BMI—Feathers, Chastain, Huffmann]
Another of the “Presley” type r & b-western-pop rockers that can go in
any category. A good deck that moves with drive. Feathers is good and
the platter is strong.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE KOOL GENTS (Vee-Jay 173)

“DO YA DO” (2:19) [Conrad BMI—Teddy Long]
The Kool Gents combine vocal characteristics to good effect. The team
works over the rhythmic jump with enough individuality to make this
happy ditty a threat. Captivating and deserves close watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8h96BaVk3M

“THIS IS THE NIGHT” (2:26) [Conrad BMI—Teddy Long]
The Gents do another good job on a slow beat ballad. Easy to listen to
deck that pleases.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE PRE-TEENS (J & S 1756)

“WHAT MAKES ME LOVE YOU LIKE I DO” (2:08) [Z. Sanders]
The trade was startled when young Frankie Lymon showed such adult
talents. Now we come upon another group that is even younger. Called
the preteeners, the group is led by a youngster about 8 or 9 who, tho
his youth is evident in his voice, his aplomb, self-possession and manner
of handling a tune is amazing. The tune is good, the lyric strong and the
general effect one that should sell the record.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYw7PZ73n2g

“PASS IT ON” (2:05) [Z. Sanders]
The kids bounce through a slow rhythmic effort with a gospel feeling.
Cute deck, but not as strong as the upper deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3solH4M2pUI

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SWENSONS (X-Tra 100)

“REMEMBER ME TO MY DARLING” (2:35) [Sylvia BMI —Oliver Hall]
The Swensons bounce lightly through a middle beat lilter with a drifty
reading. The group does a good job on the easy to listen to offering.

both sides - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvVV-KRSllQ

“GOLLY BO” (2:35) [Sylvia Music BMI—Oliver Hall]
The Swensons up the tempo on the flip and bounce out a quick beat
lively tidbit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILD BILL GRAHAM (Emerald 2010)

“MAMA CHITA” (2:38) [Calvalcade BMI—Graham]
This one opens with the wild beating of drums, and follows
through with wild screams and jungle chants. It creates a
picture of loin covered savages in a war dance and the jun-
gle telegraph system at work as natives in spread out villa-
ges pick up the messages. Interesting but not too commercial.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUKbciz4-ag

“SINBAD BLUES” (2:20) [Calvalcade BMI—Graham]
Wild Bill Graham offers a middle beat blues in which the chanter wails
about his love. Ok side with an interesting instrumental support.
