The Cash Box Disk of the Week

JOHNNY MATHIS (Columbia 40993)

“CHANCES ARE” (2:57) [Korwin ASCAP—Stillman, Allen]
“THE TWELFTH OF NEVER” (2:25) [Empress ASCAP—Webster, Livingston]

It’s a great feeling—probably to every one in the business—when a brilliant
young talent makes the grade. Johnny Mathis is one such star. An unknown
as late as December of ’56, today he is one of the most promising stars in the
business and the only newcomer we can recall who has hit simultaneously with
his first two single releases “It’s Not For Me To Say” and “Wonderful! Wonderful!”.
And in the coming weeks we can expect to see at least one more Mathis hit on
the boards. For in his latest release, the youngster hands in a masterful job of
an outstanding new love song titled “Chances Are.” It’s an extremely commercial
romantic item with a smart lyric and a beautiful melody penned by the two men
who gave Mathis “It’s Not For Me To Say,” A1 Stillman and Robert Allen. Watch
this song take off. Mathis fans have been waiting a long while for this follow-up,
and chances are it'll be another huge seller. The companion deck, “The Twelfth
Of Never” displays Johnny in a more dramatic vein as he chants an emotional
and very touching folk flavored ballad of deep love. Ray Conniff assists on both
ends with great musical backdrops. Johnny Mathis is headed for the upper echelon
of stardom and he’ll be around for many, many years.

ANDY WILLIAMS (Cadence 1336)

“LIPS OF WINE” (2:19) [Mack Martin BMI—Wolfe, Soloway]
“STRAIGHT FROM MY HEART” (2:24) [Kay Thompson ASCAP—Thompson]

Andy Williams, with two consecutive smash hits under his belt (“I Like Your
Kind Of Love” and “Butterfly”) should have no trouble making it three-in-a-
row with his latest offering “Lips Of Wine”. The song is a potent rhythm item
tailor- made for Andy’s admirers. It’s got a swinging beat, a contagious uke-
lele backdrop, and a good lyric all neatly wrapped-up by Andy in a terrific
multiple-voice delivery. Charming ditty with a delightful Hawaiian flair. The
lower lid features Williams in another multi- track swinger tagged “Straight
From My Heart”. Lively finger snapper that’ll have the happy feet jumping.
But it’s the top side that looks like the big one. Keep a tab on it.

BUDDY HOLLY (Decca 30434)

“THAT’LL BE THE DAY” (2:36) [Nor-Va-Jak BMI — Allison, Holly, Petty]
Buddy Holly bows on Decca with a potent interpretation of high flying
rock and roll hit which he co-authored. Tune is currently climbing the
charts at a torrid pace and this version could bite off a piece of the melon.
Holly’s rock-a-billy style could make this a big one in the country field.

“ROCK AROUND WITH QLLIE VEE” (2:16) [Old Charter BMI—Curtis]
Another socko rock-a-billy side with a torrid beat. Holly really belts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARLIE FUQUA’S INK SPOTS (Verve 10071)

“YOU NAME IT” (2:25) [Hallmark ASCAP — Tobias, Livingston]
The waxing is performed in the relaxed manner familiar to the
Ink Spots’ listening public. The selection is a soft pleaser. Disk
has a place in soft music programming of platter spinners.

“DARLING, DON’T CRY” (2:16) [Bourne ASCAP — Paul, Irwin, Bergman]
The side starts as a repeat of the soft work on the above side,
but turns into a swinger.

The Cash Box Award o’ the Week

CAROL FRAN (Excello 2118)

“ONE LOOK AT YOU DADDY” (2:06) [Excellorec BMI—Fran Miller]
“EMMITT LEE” (2:49) [Excellorec BMI—C. Fran]

Young Carol Fran unveils a talent that could carry the lass far.
Her handling of the middle beat, “One Look At You Daddy”, is
a cute, infectious projection with a number of vocal gimmicks.
The youngster sings the bouncer with a peppery style that in-
vites a happy participation. Has all the earmarks of a hit in all
fields. Watch it very closely. The flip, “Emmitt Lee”, is a slow
beat blues in which the thrush once again displays her talents
to good advantage. A pleasing wax that might give “Daddy” a
tussle. But in the long run we look to “Daddy” to take all the
action.

THE CHANNELS (Gone 5012)

“THAT’S MY DESIRE” (2:32) [Mills ASCAP—Loveday, Kressa]
"STAY AS YOU ARE” (2:10) [Real Gone BMI—Lewis, Dolphin]

The Channels make their first for Gone a potent reading of that pretty standard,
“That’s My Desire”. The group teams effectively as they embellish the evergreen
with several of their own innovations. The tune is given an up-to date, teener
treatment that should help bring in a rash of action. Stay close to this record’s
progress. The flip, “Stay As You Are”, is a slow beat ballad handled by the group
with a strong reading. This side is not to be overlooked in the final analysis. It
couples a solid piece of material and an equally solid performance. Both sides are
potent—tho we lean lightly to “That’s My Desire”.

TERRY DEAN (Poplar 102)

“DREAM BOY (Oh Oh Oh)” (1:58) [Chelwood BMI—Balester]
“IT’S JUST YOUR KISS” (2:10) [Acorn BMI—Burton, Randolph]

A new label and a new voice make a; simultaneous bow on a quick beat jump
with a combination r & b rock-a-billy treatment. Side comes off Grade-A. It is
an infectious jumper with a singer who bears a similarity to Frankie Lymon. A
powerful Wax with teener appeal cut into every groove. Good exposure is going
to make this a great kick-off for the new label and the hew talent. The flip, “It’s
Just Your Kiss”, is another teener offering, with a slow rhythmic beat. Well done
and two minutes of pleasant listening, but for quick action n it’ll be “Dream Boy
(Oh Oh Oh).”

LARRY BIRDSONG (Vee-Joy 254)

“IF YOU DON’T WANT ME NO MORE” (2:02) [Tollie BMI—A. Bradford]
Larry Birdsong makes a strong pitch in the direction of hitdom with his real
funky reading of the slow beat, rhythmic ballad-blues. Birdsong really feels
this song and gives it everything. Very strong offering that could take off for
the upper regions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5cJv7DIZbQ

"I’M PLEADING JUST FOR YOU” (2:41) [Tollie BMI — L. Birdsong]
Birdsong backs with another strong wax. A middle beat
accentuated rhythm effectively presented. The chanter
swings with excitement. Good coupler.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RICHARD BERRY AND THE PHARAOHS (Flip 318)

“TAKE THE KEY” (1:53) [Li- max BMI — R. Berry] Richard
Berry and The Pharaohs offer the slow beat ballad with a warm and
intense reading. Berry’s different sound comes off well with this easy
to listen to tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZIi4vpTFZ0

“NO KISSIN' AND A HUGGIN’ ” (2:28) [Limax BMI—R. Berry]
Berry and the group team on a middle beat bouncer of engaging qualities.
Cute treatment of an infectious item. Teeners should be attracted to this one.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OSCAR WILLS/PAUL GAYTEN (Argo 5277)

“FLAT FOOT SAM” (2:21) [Arc Hiphill BMI—Wills, Lewis]
Flatfoot Sam is always in a jam, and Wills tells his story in front of a frenetic
quick beat with a staccato rhythm. Exciting beat that generates foot tappin’
on the part of the listener. Simple, with almost no melody, but of the variety
that captures your imagination. This is a side to be watched. It has the
excitement, novelty gimmick and top flight read.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCc3Skld6Z8

“NERVOUS BOOGIE” (2:31) [Arc BMI—P. Gayten]
Gayten turns in a quick beat instrumental on the flipside. An energetic offer-
ing featuring the flash of the keyboard. Good listening.
