JOHN ZACHERLE (Cameo 139)

“LUNCH WITH MOTHER GOOSE” (2:45) [Mayland BMI—Sheldon, Land]
John Zacherle who made big noise with his dissertation on a “Dinner With Drac”,
again employs the ghoulish technique as he discusses a “wild” lunch date with
Mother Goose. Backdrop is again exciting. Beat-filled swinger. Should do well
since it’s a follow-up to a smash. Kids’ll probably welcome more of this eerie
novelty material.

“EIGHTY-TWO TOMBSTONES” (2:12) [Lowe ASCAP — Mann, Lowe]
Here Zacherle describes a picture of a cemetery. Recitation is again set against
a good R & R backdrop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BILL PINKY (Phillips 3524) (Bill Pinkney of the Drifters)

“AFTER THE HOP” (2:04) [HiLo BMI—Justis, Pinkney]
Phillips has a potential winner in this swinging side by an exciting new
vocalist, Bill Pinky. Side’s got a good beat and Pinky has a strong blues
voice that reminds this listener of Ray Charles. Watch this deck. It could
step out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S93p1ZWJL2Q

“SALLY’S GOT A SISTER” (2:24) [Knox BMI — Pinkney]
Pinky stays with the torrid pace as he tells about long, tall Sally’s sister.
Hot stuff that could also meet with strong acceptance in the R & B market.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PEREZ PRADO ORCH. (RCA Victor 7245)

“PATRICIA” (2:28) [Southern ASCAP — Prado]
Perez Prado comes up with an attractive new cha cha sound by using an organ
in this instrumentation. It’s a full, soft sound that gives an original quality to this
self penned cha cha item. Dance enthusiasts will go for this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QfEZg5TWsw

“WHY WAIT” (2:17) [Peer Inter’l BMI—Prado]
This mambo number is flavored with a rock and roll seasoning. Side’s got a good
swing that’s also great for dancing.

The Cash Box Sleeper of the Week

BETTY JOHNSON (Atlantic 1186)

“DREAM” (2:25) [Goldsen ASCAP—Mercer]
“HOW MUCH” (2:00) [Trinity BMI—Moore, Davie]

Versatile Betty Johnson, who made a strong showing on the charts with an unusual
novelty “Little Blue Man,” may have her biggest record to date in this latest Atlantic
release. Both sides are standouts and should get tremendous air play from her vast
dee jay admiration society. One half is a wonderful new rock-a-ballad interpretation
of a top drawer Johnny Mercer standard, “Dream”. Smooth, feelingful delivery with
Betty handing in some wonderful multiple track harmony. Commercial deck that could
travel in the “Who’s Sorry Now” orbit. The companion piece is a delightful new waltz
ballad with a fragile, sentimental feeling. Titled “How Much”, this side also displays
excellent multiple track work. This half gets prettier with each new listen. Betty has a
pair of aces back to back on this platter.

The Cash Box Sleeper of the Week

FOUR PALMS (Aladdin 3411)

“JEANIE, JOANIE, SHIRLEY, TONI” (2:12) [Aladdin BMI—Nelson, Thomas, Faison, Jackson]
“CONSIDERATION” (2:14) [Ranger ASCAP—Beck, Brandt]

Aladdin has a sleeper by a new group called the Four Palms. And it has a sound
that could make it one of the label’s biggest sellers in a long while. Titled “Jeanie,
Joanie, Shirley, Toni”, the song is a pretty rock-a-ballad with a lovely melody and
a cute romantic lyric. The lyric tells about a lad who can’t decide which of four dif-
ferent girls he wants to spend the remainder of his life with. Kids’ll probably go all
out for the number. The Palms, with an excellent lead vocalist, do a terrific job in
the delivery. Flip, “Consideration”, is another good rock-a-ballad. But it’s the upper
portion that looms as a new favorite.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KINGSTON TRIO (Capitol 3970)

“SCARLET RIBBONS” (2:15) [Mills ASCAP—Segal, Danzig]
A favorite folk ballad which the Kingston Trio presented on a recent
“Playhouse 90” program, is offered by Capitol here. The boys have
a warm blend that gives the song an inner tenderness. Tune had a
big snot on the TV show. Effect should be felt by dealers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10oDs-S7yC0

“THREE JOLLY COACHMEN” (1:45) [Beechwood BMI — Arr: Guard]
Another folk flavored ditty—this one with a British flavor—is treated
to a spirited reading by the trio. Guitar and banjo accompaniment is
excellent. Good change of pace programming material.

The Cash Box Award o’ the Week

THE PASTELS (Argo 5297)

“YOU DON’T LOVE ME ANYMORE” (2:39) [Arc & Keel BMI—The Pastels]
“LET’S GO TO THE ROCK & ROLL BALL” (2:40) [Keel BMI—The Pastels]

The Pastels follow “Been So Long” with a slow beat ballad blues.
You Don’t Love Me Anymore”, and the resulting wax looks like
another big one for the group. The lead singer is stick out on
a meaty hunk of material. Moving, melodic and highly saleable
issue. Keep both orbs on this deck. The flip, “Let’s Go To The
Rock & Roll Ball”, is a complete change of pace. The Pastels rock
on a middle beat jumper giving it a stirred up treatment the kids
can hop around to. Two good decks, with our bet placed on ‘You
Don’t Love Me Anymore”.

SONNY AND JAYCEE (Ember 1034)

“YOU KEEP DOGGIN’ ME” (2:10) [Angel BMI—Burris, Terry]
“MISTER FROGGIE” (2:19) [Angel BMI—Burris, Terry]

Sonny and Jaycee, newcomers to the Ember label, make a strong
debut with a two-sider that’ll have the customers guessing. “You
Keep Doggin,’ Me” is a quick beat bouncer with an exciting beat and
treatment. Wailing sound and down home effects come through with
stirring results and we look to this deck to stir up strong action. The
coupling, “Mister Froggie”, is another prospect for the sales column.
A quick beat treatment of the classic kiddie fo k tune. This is one that
also contains the ingredients to make it. Watch both sides.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOBLE "THIN MAN" WATTS (Baton 254)

“SHAKIN’ ” (2:10) [Dare BMI—N. Watts]
“THE SLIDE” (2:35) [Dare BMI—N. Watts]

Noble “Thin Man” Watts presents two absorbing sides that bear the qualifications
necessary for heavy sales. “Shakin’ ” is a middle beat instrumental jump with a
great sound and melodic appeal. Watts dishes up the swinger with intriguing re-
sults. Great teenage material. The coupling, “The Slide”, is a slow beat mood
blues that penetrates. Slow, swaying wax that excites with its torrid wailing.
Two top decks that deserve close attention.

CHANTELS (End 1020)

“I LOVE YOU SO” / “HOW COULD YOU CALL IT OFF”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JIMMY SIMMS (Lamp 2017)

“MYSTERY OF LOVE” (1:55) [Aladdin BMI -— Janies Simms]
Simms offers an interesting combination of mystery and rock and roll. Deck is
handled in a manner that makes this novelty a good bet. Watch it carefully—
it could capture the fancy of the teener.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlcNOgiSqdg

“NOBODY BUT YOU” (2:38) [Aladdin BMI — James Simms]
Jimmy Simms shouts out a rhythmic slow beat with a real earthy delivery. He
delivers for the r & b buyer although the beat is acceptable to the overall
teener market.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN_YdUOq7JM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARTHUR GUNTER (Excello 2137)

“LUDELLA” (2:58) [Excellorec Org BMI—A. Gunter]
Gunter offers a slow beat blues on this side and the result is good.
Gunter is sincere and effective in his plea to “Ludella”. This appears
to be the more commercial deck.

Alan Freed Resigns From WINS NEW YORK —-

Alan Freed, nationally known rock and roll dee jay, has resigned from station WINS in New York.
Jack Hook, Freed’s manager, announced the resignation last week in protest over what he termed
the station’s “wishy-washy” attitude toward him since the violence which broke out around the
Boston Arena following one of Freed’s rock and roll stage shows there recently. The Boston show,
which played to more than 6000 youngsters, was followed by a report that some fifteen persons
were robbed or assaulted by teenagers. The trouble led Mayor John B. Hynes to ban future R & R
shows in public auditoriums. Such shows were subsequently banned in New Haven, New Britain,
Conn., and Newark, N. J. Freed denied there was any trouble in or around the arena during or after
the show. Last week, Freed was indicted by Suffolk County (Boston) grand jury on charges of inciting
the unlawful destruction of property during an alleged riot reportedly touched off at the Boston Arena
performance. District Attorney Garrett Byrne, who announced the indictment, said that unless Freed
surrendered himself by next Monday, he would order him arrested and extradited to Boston for trial.
In a letter which Freed sent to WINS station manager Jock Fernhead, Freed is reported to have said
that he is resigning because the station had failed to stand “behind my policies and principles.” Freed
is also reported to have said that the station “should have given me a little support after all the un-
proved publicity from Boston”.
