THE HILLTOPPERS featuring JIMMY SACCA

“I’D RATHER DIE YOUNG” (2:36) [Randy-Smith Music]
“P.S. I LOVE YOU” (2:34) [La Salle Music]

The Hilltoppers smashed right up to the top with their successful waxing of “Trying”
and firmly established themselves as one of the leading vocal groups in the pop
music world. Since their big hit, the boys have been constantly doing good work
and now they have a song that should leave all the others far behind. With Jimmy
Sacca leading the crew, the boys warble a beautiful ballad dubbed “I’d Rather Die
Young.” The lyrics are potent, heart-felt, and extremely sincere and treated artfully
with a lovely melody. We can expect the tune to go right up to the peak. The tear
in Jimmy’s heart comes across beautifully in his voice. It’s a masterful job from all
angles. The lower lid, an oldie “P. S. I Love You,” is another outstanding number
with a stirring touch. Both ends should get loads of spins with the upper portion
hitting it big.

THE CASH BOX *AWARD O' THE WEEK*

BILLY WARD and THE DOMINOES (Federal 12129)

“DON’T LEAVE ME THIS WAY” (3:10) [Ward-Marks]
“THESE FOOLISH THINGS REMIND ME OF YOU” (3:10) [Bourne]

Billy Ward and The Dominoes sound lush as always on their latest pair of releases.
The upper lid, titled, “Don’t Leave This Way”, is a slow tempo dramatic love tune
that the boys work over with their familiar and always solid technique. Lead singer,
in excellent voice, emotionally pleads with his girl not to leave. Support by the boys
is tops and the result is another grade A plate. Tune was written by Billy Ward and
the groups manager, Rose Marks. The flip is an oldie revived in lush and beautiful
style. “These Foolish Things Remind Me Of You” is a slow tender tune given a great
and colorful arrangement with the result that the etching is for everyone. With the
proper exposure the possibilities are that it could break pop as well as blues.

SLEEPER OF THE WEEK

CHARLES BROWN (Aladdin 3176)

“RISIN’ SUN” (2:31) [Sheldon Music]
“TAKE ME" (2:51) [Bregman, Vocco & Conn]

Charles Brown dishes up a couple of slow blues numbers in his individual styling and the result
is a pair to be reckoned with. The upper lid, “Risin’ Sun,” is a tender number in which Brown
sings plaintively of the lonely nights. Brown’s handling of this eerie mood piece makes this an
unusual etching and should win a place for itself in the “hot” lists. The under lid is a similar item
done softly but it falls into the ordinary blues category. A well done item, but it’s the top lid for
the money as we see it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SWINGING SAX KARI (States 11?)

“YOU LET MY LOVE GROW COLD” (2:00) [Shapiro Bernstein]
Swinging Sax Kari provides the smooth instrumentalizing and Gloria Irving dishes up
the vocal. Together they etch an easy slow blues that should please.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAg_LYsihpU

“HENRY” (2:35) [Kencee]
The lower lid is a middle tempo bounce. Miss Irving pleads with Henry who has cooled
off towards her. Lyrics have a touch of earthiness and in spots the gal really belts it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BLENDERS (MGM 11488)

“IF THAT’S THE WAY YOU WANT IT BABY” (2:41)
The Blenders dish up a middle beat item, simply arranged, in easy fashion. Makes pleasing listening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A7tAteBq_M

“I DON’T MISS YOU ANYMORE” (2:38)
The flip is a slow tempo ditty with a catchy melody. The boys chant in mellow style against a simple
piano backing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILLIE JONES (Atlas 1028)

“SAD LOVE” (2:52)
Willie Jones sings a slow southern type blues for a not too exciting side.

“JOCKEY JUMP” (2:20)
The lower lid is a middle beat rocker and Jones belts it with feeling and
excitement. This one could catch spins.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LYNN HOPE (Aladdin 3178)

“BROKEN-HEARTED” (3 :02) [Crawford]
Lynn Hope lends his fascinating saxing to the DeSylva Henderson & Brown classic
and with able support of the ork comes through with a solid end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlsM4pdbe0Q

“MOROCCO” (3:12) [Mesner]
The ork dishes up a quick beat bounce for the jitterbug crowd in slick style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YskOAAh5Z6A

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE TRENIERS (Okeh 6960)

"ROCKIN’ IS OUR BIZNESS” (2:41) [Mobile Music]
The Treniers sock out a wild rocker as they sing, shout and have a real jamboree.
Orking is frenzied. Don Hill’s torrid saxing helps carry the excitement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTGtdLxMC0M

“SUGAR DOO” (2:39) [Mobile]
A middle beat weirdie that moves, but is restrained when compared to the upper
deck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiOsWfpa2bk

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EARL FORREST (Meteor 5005)

“I CAN’T FORGIVE YOU” (2:39)
Earl Forrest, who had a big one in “Whoopin’ & Hollerin’,” comes through with
a solid reading of a slow rhythmic blues. Could get juke action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDacnBaOQzg

“I WRONGED A WOMAN” (2:37)
Forrest sings emotionally as he tells how he wronged his woman because he
thought she had another man.

https://youtu.be/nyZxs6kx0fw?t=139

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRANKIE LEE SIMS (Specialty 459)

“LUCY MAE BLUES” (2:29) [Venice Music]
Frankie Lee Sims is new to the reviewer. The chanter sings in an unusual manner and he catches
the ear. Sims handling of the Southern type blues makes this an interesting side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsZu1QDD7Ck

“DON’T TAKE IT OUT ON ME” (2:47) [Venice]
Accompanied by a weird guitar Sims asks his girl not to take it out on him because she is mad at
someone else. Etching provides a chuckle and Sims is good, and to repeat, different.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c5btiaatZw

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“THE FIVE WILLOWS” (Allen 1000)

“ROCK LITTLE FRANCIS” (2:03) [Golden]
A new group on a new label gets off to a good start with an exciting reading of a quick beat
rocker. The boys blend in happy fashion against go-go instrumentalizing and handclapping
with an effective fade out at the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgGAZpGn7mw

“MY DEAR, DEAREST DARLING” (2:41) [Golden]
The boys come up with a change of pace for the coupler. A romantic slow beat is capably
handled and the result is a pleasant etching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvjwoMiOhz4

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BOYER BROS. (Excello 2010)

“HE DELIVERED ME” (2:52)
The Boyer Bros, blend on a dramatic slow beat religious tune with impressive
effect. The boys chant in good style against a simple instrumental backing.

"HE’S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS” (2:52)
The under portion is a change of pace in tempo. The brothers dish up a quick
beat gospel tune in solid fashion.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CROWS (Rama 3)

“SEVEN LONELY DAYS” (2:41)
A new group, The Crows, get behind Viola Watkins, and polish off a blues reading of
a pop hit in solid fashion. The group makes pretty noises and should grab juke coin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SplG7CQCMnA

“NO HELP WANTED” (2:38)
This tune also kicked up a fuss in the pop and western fields. The Crows with the aid
of a good arrangement etch an exciting version and with proper distribution this disk
could be a big one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjvCE4Nq-c8

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHAPTERS (Republic 7038)

“GOODBYE, MY LOVE” (2:38)
The Chapters etch a slow tempo ditty in a style that makes pleasant listening.
Deep voiced lead comes through well against an easy backing that features
an effective piano.
