Both are 10's all day, every day.

But I'd have to give a slight edge to Blue Moon of Kentucky. Perhaps
because I just love that slap bass.

Not sure how it did in the debut contest. I would assume very high.
Though I'm guessing we only voted on one side.

What the FUCK, in the top 10, JESUS!
a repetitive and relatively mediocre outing by Presley !!!

First off, loads of great records are repetitive. I don't see repetition in and of itself as a negative at all. Many times it's a big positive. I see "Too Much" as Presley's most R&B sounding record.

I do. I'm not an Elvis fan, and I dislike 5 out of Bruce's top 10, but "Too Much" is not one of them.

I agree with you again, but it's not the bass, it's the *song*. I love Bill Monroe's waltz-time version too.

I've never gone overboard on "Too Much". It's just a 7 for me and definitely bottom of the Elvis numbers listed above. There are quite a few more titles in Bruce's list that I'd rate higher than it too

What are the 5 you dislike in the list above?

And I also agree with you. I do love the song, but that bass just
fascinates me.

I don't think much of the song, it's the performance that's great, with the bass being the best part of the instrumentation.

I misspoke. It's Elvis' version/performance of the song that is the 10.
Though I do also like Bill Monroe's also, but not in that rarefied air.
And I glad you agree about that bass.

Speaking of Too Much....

Some years ago, a DJ on Elvis Radio send me some interview clips with
Scotty Moore. One of them has Scotty explaining how he fucked up the
guitar solo on Too Much. If anyone is interested, I could email them the
clip.

In case anyone's interested, here's a list of my favorite Elvis records
that I made a few years ago for one of Bruce's "list your favorites"
projects. It was worthwhile doing this, I think, because up to that
point I probably would have snarled "I don't have any Elvis favorites."
But it turned out I do. Note that "Too Much" is #27 out of 35.

01-Blue Moon of Kentucky
02-Jailhouse Rock
03-Love Me Tender
04-Burning Love
05-Danny Boy
06-I Want You , I Need You , I Love You
07-Heartbreak Hotel
08-(Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I
09-So Glad You're Mine
10-Here Comes Santa Claus
11-Peace In The Valley
12-Mystery Train
13-Take My Hand Precious Lord
14-Trying To Get To You (1968 version)
15-Milkcow Blues Boogie
16-Blue Christmas
17-Suspicious Minds
18-That's All Right
19-Are You Lonesome Tonight
20-Such A Night
21-It's Now Or Never
22-Suspicion
23-Reconsider Baby
24-Good Rockin' Tonight
25-Don't Be Cruel
26-All Shook Up
27-Too Much
28-One Night
29-My Baby Left Me
30-Tomorrow Night (UNDUBBED VERSION ONLY!)
31-I Need Your Love Tonight
32-I Feel So Bad
33-Crying In The Chapel
34-Baby Let's Play House
35-Loving You

Your top 6 Elvis songs, Steve, were all recorded at Sun...

A Sun recording by Elvis not on your list, that I like, is

I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin')

Those Suns were foundational to me as an 8 year old.

So you heard those records by 1956?

Or did you discover them when they started coming out on RCA albums in the late 50s?

According to my info, RCA released all the Sun singles in December '55.

Then the remaining Suns such as Blue Moon & Trying To Get To you in  '56.

So I didn't hear the actual Sun's in '56, but did hear the RCA Suns. I
had an older brother who had an extensive record collection, which I now
have, and he allowed me to have full access to that collection.

It's very possible, though I can't be positive he did, and
unfortunately, I can't ask him. But I know he had them when I was pretty
young.
