THE CASH BOX DISK OF THE WEEK

PATTI PAGE (Mercury 70380; 70380 x 45)

“STEAM HEAT” (2:16) [Frank ASCAP—Adler, Ross]
“LONELY DAYS” (2:31) [Lear ASCAP—Moore, Hurd]

Keep 'em different is Patti Page’s formula and she does just that as she bids for her third hit of ’54
with a real classy piece of material. First the thrush clicked with a slow waltz in “Changing Partners.”
Then came the rhythm spiritual “Cross Over The Bridge” which is pressing the top spot. And now the
thrush offers a terrific jumper called “Steam Heat” that’ll surely draw loads of loot for all concerned.
Patti gets a solid backing on this sockeroo from the coming B’way musical “Pajama Game.” And her
multiple voicing comes over great. “Lonely Days” is a pretty soft waltz item given the unique warm
touch that only Patti can give a song. Looks like another hit.

GLORIA MANN & CARTER RAYS (Jubilee 5142; 45-5142)

“GOODNIGHT SWEETHEARTGOODNIGHT” (2:40) [Arc BMI—]
A beautiful new ballad gets a hit contending delivery from Gloria Mann and the Carter Rays.
Terrific job that’ll sell well in blues too. Tune is clicking in East.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBfcpEt8mFc

“LOVE-ME-BOY” (2:20) [Flair BMI]
The artists rhythm through a cute jumper on this end. This side is definitely better fitting
for the rhythm and blues market.

*AWARD O' THE WEEK*

AMOS MILBURN (Aladdin 3240)

“MILK AND WATER” (3:08) [Aladdin—Rudolph Toombs]
“I’M STILL A FOOL FOR YOU” (2:23) [Aladdin—Rudolph Toombs]

Amos Milburn’s going to shock his fans as he switches to “Milk and Water”. Poor old Amos is off
the whiskey, scotch, etc. ’cause his doc ordered it so. The old whiskey man is really suffering
as he sings this middle tempo bouncer, but he promises he won’t be on this kick for long. A cutie
that leads the way for another in the same series. Should follow in the same pattern as his nu-
merous hits. The under lid, “I’m Still A Fool For You”, has Amos telling his baby he’s still a fool
for her no matter how wild she runs. Amos rocks through this middle tempo ditty in more forceful
style. A good pairing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAYE ADAMS (Herald 429)

“SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE” (2:25) [Danby Music BMI—Roberts, McCoy]
“CRAZY MIXED UP WORLD” (2:30) [Angel Music BMI—Adams, Stone]

Faye Adams comes up with a strong pair that should create strong sales action. One side, “Somebody
Somewhere”, is a quick beat jump that rocks along on a semi-religious kick that proved so successful
heretofore. Deck, while it has the Faye Adams full throated singing and styling, is different than the
“Shake A Hand” styling. Flip, “Crazy Mixed Up World”, is a slow emotional storm. Gal generates sparks
singing from the heart as she tells of her sad romances “sharing someone else’s man”. Two powerful
items.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KENZIE MOORE (Specialty 491)

“HOW MUCH LONGER?” (2:50) [Venice BMI]
Kenzie Moore does a slow rhythmic blues with a moving treatment that
comes off for an okay side.

“IT AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A DREAM” (2:47) [Venice BMI—W. E. Buyem]
A very similar item. A pleasing side performed in okay manner.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MEL WALKER (Mercury 70370)

“I’D LIKE TO MAKE YOU MINE” (2:40) [E. B. Marks ASCAP]
Mel Walker sings a beaty bounce in warm and intimate style. An infectious romantic
ditty. Rhythm section lends solid support.

“ANOTHER SAD NIGHT” (2:41) [Motion Music ASCAP]
Walker projects on a middle tempo blues smoothly. Side comes out fair.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JOHN GREER (Groove 0016)

“TOO LONG” (2:30) [Royal Music ASCAP—John Greer]
John Greer dishes up a rhythmic romantic ditty on the cute side.
Greer sells in solid style with potent orking to back up the artist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp-eH9kPM1U

“WHEN THE ROSES BLOOM IN LOVER’S LANE” (2:20) [Royal Music ASCAP-—Coblin, Coblin, Greer]
A slow tempo instrumental that makes light and interesting listening.

(IT'S NOT AN INSTRUMENTAL)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez0fWKq1Zto

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE FOUR BARS (Josie 005)

“GRIEF BY DAY, GRIEF BY NIGHT” (2:16) [Benell BMI—Daye]
The Four Bars blend smoothly and with a good sound as they chant the slow blues
with lyrics describing the woe inflicted by the woman he can’t get along with. Good
platter that could break out big.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBAQtQm_DFM

“HEY BABY” (2:25) [Benell BMI—Daye]
The flip is another goodie. Side has a real beat that could appeal to pop as well as
R & B. An infectious tempo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oTrABZoSNk

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHECKERS (King 4710)

“HOUSE WITH NO WINDOWS” (2:26) [Jay & Cee BMI —Henry Glover]
The Checkers perform a moving slow blues on the sorrowful kick. Having lost his love, lead
mournfully sings of his intention to move into a house without any windows so that no one
will see him crying. Group blends smoothly behind the lead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgB7ASdK7bg

“DON’T STOP DAN” (2:49) [Jay & Cee BMI—Glover]
The Checkers come up with what is obviously an attempt to grab another “60 Minute Man”.
Wax is a good issue with a beat that sells. Lyrics are along the same vein as “Sixty” and
the lead voice sounds very much like the lead on the tune that made the Dominoes. Could
catch on and create loads of action.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELLS OF JOY (Peacock 1726)

“WELL, WELL, NO, NO, NO” (2:30) [Lion—Littlefield, Robey]
A potent syncopated religious item flavored by that talented group, Bells of Joy.
Should capture a strong segment of gospel sales.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld47aKZ-Gb0

"NEVER LIT IT BE TOO LATE” (2:47) [Lion—P.D.]
The Bells etch a slow tempo gospel item with sincerity and somberness. A spiritual
that inspires reflective listening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFiWfwyJfok

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WILLIE HEADEN (Dootone 1203)

“I LOVE YOU BOBBY SOX”(2:53) [Dootsie Williams BMI—Willie Headen]
Willie Headen sings a beaty ditty in happy style and comes off with a riding item
that should please the hopping crowd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkHvA_mDGKc

“STOP DRINKING” (2:23) [Dootsie Williams BMI—Willie Headen]
Another drinking song. Headen sings out a moving blues effectively. Sings the blues
about his juice head” woman and her running around. Punch is centered on the line,
"stop drinking, pass me that last glass of beer”. Good side with a feeling that could
catch on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLwDH0_1uCY

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BLUE DOTS (DeLuxe 6052)

“DON’T DO THAT BABY”(2:43) [Franlin BMI—Davis, Pauling]
The Blue Dots rock out a driving item with a solid beat. Group blends with
an appealing bounce. A good disk.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmFg1Z0bwd8

“YOU’VE GOT TO LIVE FOR YOURSELF” (3:15) [Franlin BMI—Davis, Pauling]
An intriguing side with a slow syncopated beat. Sound created is different.
Group has a potent style that could catch on and create sales action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFpJLOvqsXU

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“YOUNG” JESSIE (Modern 921)

“I SMELL A RAT” (2:40) [Stoller, Leiber]
Young Jessie drives through this novelty item for an exciting side. Jessie does a good
job on a record that moves. The shouter belts it from the shoe tops.
