10 more obscurities chosen at random from my favorites lists

Today......from 1956

John Brim – I Would Hate To See You Go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYVs8K5nLkI

Backed here by “The Gary Kings” on Brim’s last outing for Chess. The all star lineup on this fine blues reads John Brim (vcl, gtr) Little Walter (hca) Robert Lockwood Jr (gtr) Willie Dixon (bs) Fred Below (dms). Is that a line up or what?

Sadly for John I don’t think the record got that much of a promotion push from Chess since it was out in May 1956 and I imagine most of Chess’ resources would have gone to promote Chuck’s “Roll Over Beethoven” also a new release that month

The Calvaes – Fine Girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8OWRBNuIg0

Comprising James "Zeke" Brown (Lead),James Bailey,Paul Morgan,Donald "Duck" Coles and Donald Handley The Calvaes all hailed from the same area around State Street in Chicago. They eventually reached the ears of Eli Toscano who owned and ran Cobra Records a noted r&b label in the city. Cobra put out a couple of singles by the group the first of which was the catchy uptempo “Fine Girl”.

Later in 1959 The Calvaes emerged once again—this time on Chess backing Oscar Boyd on the more famous “Anna Macora”

NOTE : The Calvaes are in no way related to or have any connection with the similarly named Calvanes group out of Los Angeles

Earl Epps – Be-Bop Blues
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZBrsfpZYpw

Something of a mystery man Earl Epps emerged in the middle of 1956 with the rather rough edged rockabilly “Be-Bop Blues” on the small Minor label of Houston,Tx owned and run by Danny Ross and his brother Minor. The tiny label attracted more than its share of future famous names when Mickey Gilley recorded for the label shortly afterwards as well as country star Claude Gray

The Jivers – Ray Pearl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQAuFZYyR2w

Long time favorite of mine “Ray Pearl” was the second release on Aladdin by Los Angeles group The Jivers comprising John Saulter (lead) Darryl Perrault (baritone/bass) Pete Bryant (ten) Doug Brown (ten) Charles Farmer (bass).

Unusually both their first release “Cherie” and this “Ray Pearl” issue made it across the pond and got UK releases on a couple of now super-rare and correspondingly super-valuable Vogue label singles

Vern Pullens – Bop Crazy Baby
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlOIE3QiSYw

In the middle of 1956 from Bennie Hess’s Spade label in Houston,Texas came Mr Vern Pullens and the decent “Bop Crazy Baby” which in the mid-60’s reigned as THE rockabilly record of the moment for a while---thanks to its huge rarity and to its inclusion on the rockabilly auction lists of “Breathless” Dan in Wales (eventually getting a UK release in 1972 via Piers Chalmers’ Injun imprint)

Sailor Boy – Country Home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjGtbarnWcA

Debut record (cut for Johnny Otis’ Dig label in Los Angeles) by Alex Spearman---here under his “Sailor Boy” moniker. The good blues record features vocals and guitar by Spearman with Don Johnson (tpt) Jackie Kelso (ten sax) Fred Harmon (bar sax) Jimmy Nolen (gtr) Devonia Williams (pno) Johnny Parker (bs) Leard Bell (dms)

The “B” side of this record is “Country Boogie” from Preston Love. Both sides appear on the 1992 Ace LP collection of Dig sides : “Dig These Blues”

The Sequins – Why Can’t You Treat Me Right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SjjqvjgzcU

Coming from New York City these Brooklyn boys had been around the block before with records---in a previous life they were none other than The Emanons who had recorded earlier in the year for Gee and Josie in the city scoring a minor local hit with their memorable version of one of my most favorite of old standards---Rodgers & Hart’s famous “Blue Moon”

Both the Emanons and Sequins consisted of Ronald Coleman (lead) (and no..NOT the “Lost Horizon” movie star guy),Carl White (1st tenor.Ralph Steely (2nd tenor) James Dukes (baritone) and James Hill (bass).

Switching to Bobby Robinson’s Red Robin label they recorded the last release that would ever appear via that company---and an archetypal example of the classic “New York City” vocal group sound

Mad Dog Sheffield – Mad Dog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEXX2zCaDYE

Hailing from Lake Charles La it is therefore no surprise that Charles “Mad Dog” Sheffield’s debut record was cut for the most famous local label in the vicinity---Eddie’s Shuler’s noted Goldband company. The aptly titled “Mad Dog” sadly failed to register with the buying public not even with a solid backing from the famous Clarence “Bon Ton” Garlow & his ensemble

As plain Charles Sheffield his luck will eventually change though---after he later signs to record for Jay Miller in Crowley,La with releases following on the Rocko and Excello imprints and scores a surprise local hit with “It’s Your Voodoo Working” in 1961

George Smith – Down In New Orleans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8FZvTrdefM

Not too many r&b records contain honest to God yodelling but here’s one---and a pretty good one too IMO---that DOES!!

Lady and gents….I give you Mr George Smith and the last of the several records released by him on the RPM label.

(The proper label for this is a black RPM label but for some reason it was booted on a RED RPM label)

Jimmy Stayton – Hot Hot Mamma
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2YnGVETQ-0

If the Stayton name sounds vaguely familiar then maybe its because I nominated his slightly later in 1956 “You’re Gonna Treat Me Right” in the very first of Bruce’s Obscurities contests wayyyy back in 2019!

Just like its successor “Hot Hot Mamma” is a cool rockabilly number with some hot guitar and like its successor released on the tiny Blue Hen label in Harrington,Delaware (did Delaware ever produce anything else noteworthy in our era other than a minor Perry Como hit?)

Certainly---Jimmy Stayton apart---the most notable thing Blue Hen ever did seems to have been turning down Patsy Cline for a recording contract)

It sure wasn't a hit when some silly person nominated it for the
"Obscurities" tournament here. :(

Yes,I remember that well!

It was in the Obscurities contest in April 2020 in Round 1 where I actually voted your Sheffield as my #2 choice ahead of my own "Oh-Rooba-Lee" (Arthur Lee Maye & The Crowns) nomination at #3

I'm afraid #1 simply HAD to be Ronnie Self's "Pretty Bad Blues" (Steve's nomination IIRC) which went on to win thew entire contest (so becoming IIRC the first white ar tist to actually win a contest)

Very good one. A 7 here.

Also a 7.

Excellent, an 8.

Not a favorite, a 6.

This is a 6. Flip side (It's My Life) is better IMO. Killer slap bass.

Another good one, a 6.

Good uptempo doo wop, a 6.

First one I did not have or know. Only a 5 because I don't like the vocal and all of the barking sounds.

> George Smith – Down In New Orleans
> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8FZvTrdefM

Had it on an album but never made an MP3. Something this fast does not work for him IMO. A 3. Sort of a takeoff on "Mule Skinner Blues" I guess.

Pretty good rockabilly, a low 6, but I prefer the next release, "you're Gonna Treat Me Right," a 7.

Okay, I am gonna go more to obscure this time rather than the best (sort of) obscurities.

Here are 5, I'll get to the other 5 later.

On J & S, The Jay Netts, Justine "Baby" Washington, Anna Barnhill, Joyce Peterson and Theresa Chatman. It's a rewrite of "Lonely Nights" by the Hearts, but the record is even more raw.

Where Are You Tonight - Jay Netts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SMwEdCCw-Q

On United, Long Man Binder and his Thin Men.

I'm A Lover - Long Man Binder
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNgC2DDBKoI

Rare rockabilly record on the King label. Delbert Barker, born in Kentucky and moved to Ohio as a youngster.

https://rcs-discography.com/rcs/pics/00/157.jpg

No Good - Robin Hood ¦ Delbert Barker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOmymfijPDM

More rockabilly, this time on the Meteor label from Memphis.

https://rcs-discography.com/rcs/show_pic.php?key=387&type=ls

Don't Shoot Me Baby - Bill Bowen and the Rockets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVb3s3ZuwIU

On the Ekko label, Lou Millet was a Disc jockey on WLCS (Baton Rouge, La.).

Didn't know this, don't have it listed not in my Kreiter. Just a 5 but it may grow on me more
I think the entire membership of the group changed by the time of "Sally Go Round The Roses"

I have this as a 7 but in 1955 (October to be exact)

Just a 5 so not in my regular list. I have a blue King label copy somewhere

#258 on my list and an 8. And of course has "...(I'm Not Ready To Die)" added to title

Don't care for this one. I have his "Shorty The Barber" as a 7 in 1956 and his original of "Slip Slip
Slippin' In" as a 6 (tho the better Eddie Bond cover gets a 7)

A 6 for me so doesn't make my favorites list

A 5 here

As I already indicated I purposely avoided using unreleased items in the series. They'll come seperately later

Gene's in fine fettle but I never cared that much for the creaky old song. A 6

And the source should be Capitol LP T764 as the "Bluejean Bop!" album precedes the EP

Over here this appeared also as a Capitol single in early 1957---the flip of "Jumps,Giggles And Shouts"

Long time rockabilly fave. #314 on my list and a 7

Both above pretty average. Just 5's

Good rockabilly and real popular with our store crowd. #772 on my list and a 7

You are joking right? Only one version of this in '56 and Ivory Joe is #356 and a 7

Nice one #732 non my list and a 7

There was some dispute over this one at the time of its inclusion in the September 2019 Obscurities contest.

I’m not sure this ever got resolved did it?

But it was reissued on Teenage 1001 in 1956. Maybe Mae's record was
reissued then too??

My 2 favorite REALLY obscure records from 1956. I've never seen a copy of either record in person.

https://rcs-discography.com/rcs/show_pic.php?key=795&type=ls

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFgLhfo6NtE

The sound quality on the above is unbelievable. I'm gonna replace my MP3.

Before we move on to another Year, I'd like to say that two of the
most enjoyed artist-songs in Roger's fave-obscure playlist were:

John Brim – I Would Hate To See You Go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYVs8K5nLkI

The Calvaes – Fine Girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8OWRBNuIg0

I would also probably have enjoyed, if Dig had not released this
record with a distorted vocal:

Sailor Boy – Country Home
