Once again, the deal was if my 17-year-old friend was going to come over to
my place this weekend to play games for hours on my computer, he had to
watch a notable movie with me and I got to pick the movie. When I began to
caution him that this time he would have to read subtitles, he reminded me
that he watches Japanese anime all the time and subtitles would not be a
problem. Well of course. In fact, as the movie went along he was full of
interesting tidbits about how the samurai wore their swords (he called them
katanas), how their armor was made, who the ronin were, and on and on. And
he really liked that Toshiro Mifuni guy. “He’s a good actor.” Yeah, when I
picked this movie I did good.

I had seen THE SEVEN SAMURAI once, a long time ago on TV, and I remembered
that I liked it but I had forgotten exactly how good it really is. It’s
thrilling, it’s funny, it’s moving, the cinematography is outstanding, and
it’s an intelligent study of human nature that transcends time and
cultures. We had a fine time watching it.

The kid will be getting a high-powered gaming computer for Christmas, so
these visits are numbered. Too bad. I have been enjoying the opportunity to
revisit some of the great movies

When I asked him if he had ever seen THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN He responded,
“Oh yeah… It’s got Denzel Washington in it.” Did you know they had remade
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN? I did not know that.

Off topic but perhaps you can point out to your friend (if you haven't
already) that there is this wonderful <no frills , only content> online
discussion medium called usenet. And we even discuss movies , among many
other things.
