Dipping into the jazz thread for the month, the latest "classic"
piano trio from drummer-polymath Tyshawn Sorey (b.1980):

https://tyshawn-sorey.bandcamp.com/album/continuing

From the release notes:
>Continuing is drummer Tyshawn Sorey's highly-anticipated follow-up
>to Mesmerism and The Off-Off Broadway Guide to Synergism, his two
>critically-acclaimed 2022 release that feature this avowed
>avant-gardist's surprising forays into classic, swinging jazz.
>Those two prior releases were voted #4 and #5 best albums of the
>year, respectively, in the annual Francis Davis Jazz Poll of over
>150 jazz critics. In two 4 ½ Star reviews, Downbeat called Mesmerism
>"wonderfully simple, yet breathtakingly deep" and Off-Off Broadway
>(featuring saxophonist Greg Osby) "music robust enough to have you
>believe the energy generated by the group is its own discrete force."

I.e. much more "classic" style than I usually hear....

I first heard Terrasson years ago when he played piano for the Ron Carter Trio with Russell Malone on guitar. He played quite well, thought he was heavily Monk influenced, not such a bad thing. A couple years later we heard him perform solo at the same venue (Regatta Bar in Harvard Square) and I was disappointed, sounded more like a cocktail bar pianist. I do not think he has gotten any better. I wish he had developed more in the style of Monk, although everyone is entitled to their own style, just thought he was more interesting then.

The next time Ron Carter came to play there, he had Mulgrew Miller, also with Malone. That was a superb set.

Yes - I can imagine that set. Nice. I know nothing of Terrasson except the name - I took him to be French but I assume his playing career was in the USA. I heard from others that his early promise didn't materialise.

Thierry Eliez is the best of the bunch. He was superb in Dee Dee Bridgewater's French band. I like his whole approach. Very French and a very, very good technique.

Christian Jacob is another I don't know much about - also a career in the USA seemingly. Formidable technique, advanced harmonies and voicings and a virtuoso right hand. Very clever guy, and very busy with top people, though I don't think he was distinctive enough to make it under his own name.

Thanks for confirming you're doing a bit. Do you think you're adding to
the attractiveness of the group for those who wish to discuss music?

Hey - that's a wonderful story of Igor and Charlie Parker. Of course everyone courted both one and the other in their time - they were superstars. All kinds of people hung out with Stravinsky, from Dylan Thomas to Julian Bream to Picasso and throw in a few willing ladies as well.

I love the bit about Charlie quoting the Firebird. Exactly what he would do! They were geniuses, out of this world.

Of course not. I'll stop when Andy stops (trying to censor only one topic and freely posting OT on other topics). Have you scolded Andy for his OT posting?

Speaking of women, it's a real shame there aren't more women contributors here for all kinds of reasons. There was one very erudite woman a few years ago who posted a lot of great stuff but sadly she wandered off.

And sadly it's the same on the hi-fi and electronics newsgroups I hang out on. So unbalanced.

I'll have to go back to the poetry forums I used to contribute to. There was a great atmosphere there - lots of very sensitive people, both male and female. Such a nice change. I used to go to poetry adult evening classes as well, but they closed down in my area.

Yes, Usenet has always been unbalanced, although as you say, some
topics more than others. It's gotten worse though... women have
been drive away differentially, from already lower numbers.

I felt like listening to Chopin's 4th Ballade and was strangely underwhelmed by the Ashkenazy 1964 Decca Legend performance.
No need for recommendation, please!
Just saying what I listened to.

Well, we at least have this guy - cheregi / Ellie Kerry - who is pretending to be a woman; that's sth isn't it? ;D

You know what I can't get in my head? How can Haydn be a favourite composer of yours? You completely lack humour. You realize Haydn wasn't a donkey like you are, right?

Just asking btw...

Very valuable information btw - Donkeyjewel.

Herman, since you are so well acquainted with Chopin and obviously know how to play him better than Ashkenazy, maybe you could enlighten us on why you were underwhelmed? Your connoisseurship - as shown in the above post of yours - is always well appreciated in this ng.

I see that I started a thread on this years ago which is still going. Can't remember who I liked, though. Listening to one or two on YT now I did like Rubinstein, Friedman, Hofmann, Koczalski, Feinberg and Sofronitsky. Horowitz and Richter were a bit disappointing. I'm a bit of a sucker for the Golden Age as you can see. Argerich is nice, though.

Nope, this is WAYLTL.
People just say what they're listening to.
That's what I did.

Maybe you will come around to liking that recording again as I did
with Schiff's 1983 Goldbergs.

Always sticking to the rules, eh, Herman - Mr. Vanilla?

What you did was take my question seriously...

You know, besides you liking Haydn, I really don't get why you are still talking to me? I doubt you are having as much fun as I have...

Some advice: Screw Chopin man... get out some Haydn - maybe he will even change you into a better person ;D

Yesterday I watched a YouTube of the 4th Ballade played on a Pleyel by

Why would I? Nor am I scolding you, just asking if this is the
