Human nature being what it is, we're always going to get lists. But jazz is "The Sound Of Surprise" to quote the great Whitney Balliett book. The exciting thing about it is hearing for the first time a great improvisation on a familiar set of chords. That's what hooked musicians into jazz and filled jazz clubs all over the world. And why after a classical conservatoire education I played jazz - you could change the notes!
