BBC Building A Library today was Petrushka. The presenter liked Boulez, Petrenko, Salonen, Ozawa and Roth but chose Concertgebouw/Chailly. Sensible selection IMO.

Other favourites?

Just with Concertgebouw, I’d choose Hans Rosbaud over Chailly. Only LP-aged folks know William Steinberg/PSO (Command Classics) but it’s long been a favorite. Don’t see how any list could exclude Monteux/BSO despite some rough edges…or maybe because of them. It’s the 1911 orchestration too, which adds to the “who needs X-ray textures in early Stravinsky” pile. Ansermet (1950), Ancerl too.. Kondrashin/COA (live, once on Philips), just because somebody’s got to issue that long OOP series again!

I imprinted on Ansermet, which was no bad thing. Still sounds good.

Another piece I find generally acceptable on record.

The Boulez NYP is available in a hybrid cd reissue with a quad layer on
Dutton.

I have a hard time being particular with this piece. Almost any performance will do it for me. I listened to a very clean LP of Steinberg/Pittsburgh the other day and had it in my head for several days after.

None. I don't consider Stravinsky to be music.

The BBC should focus on building taste and
on educating its audience rather than building
"libraries".

Just like everything British, the BBC is stuck
in the 1960s. With YT and all other streaming
options "libraries" are a thing of the past.

Sorry, Melmoth!
