The first performance I ever heard of the B minor Sonata was Lipatti's, and in the ensuing sixty years I have not encountered one to match it on record, though I attended a performance in Los Angeles on Easter Sunday in about 1976 in which Rubinstein seemed to have a direct channel to the same source that inspired Chopin. A couple of performances that are not listed earlier in this thread that I think should be heard are Martha Argerich's on DG (dazzingly brilliant) and a live performance by Daniil Trifonov, available on Youtube, which impressed me very much. Also, there is Josef Hofmann's recording of the first movement, available on Marston, which, like everything Hofmann recorded, should be heard by anyone seriously interested in music written for the piano.
