Stravinsky's Tango and Rag and Rachmaninoff's Op. 23/10 - after a week of Lyapunov. Solving chess problems. Puts me seldom in a good mood, but when it does ...

Nice! Reminds me of the recent passing of Max Morath at age 96.

Dear antisemites and Jews,

I want to share with you all an epiphany I had... screw everything I said before... screw both Kleibers, screw Karajan, screw Beecham, screw Walter, screw Klemperer, screw Furtwängler, screw Mitropoulos and screw Fricsay.... basically screw most of the so-called musicians - especially Herman... my favourite musicians as of now are: Celibidache, Ivan Fischer, Josef Krips, Peter Maag, Charles Munch, Otmar Suitner and Sándor Végh wrt conductors; Eschenbach, Pletnev, Richter and YES wrt pianists...

may hashem bless Dan for getting me out of my cave with his post about Ivan Fischer's Mozart Symphony 41; Fischer's Zauberflöte was actually the first one (at least consciously/as far as I remember) that I heard and loved (back then I had no clue about Fischer being the conductor, or about conductors in general)... can't believe I fell for Klemperer after him...

--
Favourite Mozart Opera recordings:

Nozze: Suitner
DG: Krips
Cosi: I. Fischer
Zauberflöte: I. Fischer

Favourite Beethoven 9: Krips (Everest) and Munch -- and maybe Celibidache; will have to listen to him again; I should say I care most about the slow movement in this symphony.

*In my defense: I never liked the recordings (Klemperer's Zauberflöte or DG) on the whole, only parts of it (as I already explained in some other thread); today though, I really can't listen to them at all... but that goes for most recordings of pieces I like...

Just listened to the slow movement of Munch's recording again, and I think the brass is missing a little bit too much for my taste... (I have to say I checked this out after I stumbled over a comment by Johannes Roehl on talkclassical on Beethoven 5 and the Kleibers; so thanks to him) So actually screw myself for saying screw the Kleibers...

For Beethoven 9, my favourites: E. Kleiber and Krips (slow movement - I should add that I have not listened much to the other movements by Krips simply because I am not too interested in them); and no Celibidache.

Actually... after listening again... screw both Kleibers... not my style of Beethoven... E. Kleiber in 9 is way too heavy, a way too romantic approach.... very dusty Beethoven... and I don't like his phrasing often...

I have a feeling who my favourite is besides Krips... will just need to think a little bit more about it.

Okay guys... Celibidache just isn't for me... his Mozart 40 is nice, probably one of the best, if not the best... but I just don't need it as I don't like the piece too much... his style in general just isn't for me, and his older recordings don't do much for me as well...

Maag's 38 is very overrated I think... the Decca one, and the Music and Arts is not good as well imo... the only thing I really like of Maag is his performance of Mozart's Symphony Nr 32 - of which I only like the slow movement; and it's probably the best performance of this piece on record. WRT Mozart Symphony 38 I feel Végh might be the best choice... but it's a long while since I listened to it... I mostly care about the slow movement in this symphony as well... oh and Maag's recording of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with de Peyer is another great recording of his, but I just don't like the piece too much.

Favourite Beethoven 9 for me is: the RCO with Iván Fischer - just bought the Blu-ray set - and the LSO with Krips (Everest), speaking only about the slowmovement here, still haven't managed to listen to Krips fully; and with Fischer I dipped into some parts of the other movements which I like and found them really beautiful. Awaiting both... very happy...

My two favourite composers: Mozart and Beethoven.

Favourite conductors (as of yet and for now): Iván Fischer, Josef Krips, Peter Maag, Otmar Suitner, Sándor Végh
Favourite pianists (as of yet and for now): Eschenbach, Pletnev, Richter, YES

Will need to listen some more...

Thank you for listening.

God damn it, forget what I said before... just bought Celibidache's Beethoven 9 as well, another favourite... it's just really beautiful... count him to my favourite conductors

The EMI one, not the one on Archipel.

And no... Iván Fischer is not a good Beethoven conductor... it's all a bit lackluster, the sound is just really beautiful... going to send it back... was a mistake... listened to it hours ago... and hmmm... should have stayed with my first feeling... which was: not good... but then I thought it was interesting in some ways... anyway, Celibidache and Krips in Beethoven 9 for me.

I'd mentioned elsewhere that I sometimes dread being asked about
what I do in random social situations, since explaining what "new
music" is is largely impossible with people who have no idea about
anything from the previous generation, or even the one before
that.... This is of course lamentable, since especially when someone
expresses an interest, it's sort of my job.... But being "on" all
the time, and having to think so much to try to find somewhere to
start a conversation, is challenging....

Anyway, that setup was too long, but a young couple I'd run into
at the local bar had asked me such questions, seeming interested,
and although I don't think they have any idea what new music is
like, they were sure I should check out music by David Maslanka
(b.1943). Apparently their band teacher thought he was great.

So, fair is fair, and I listened to Vol. 3 of the _Music of David
Maslanka_ today, on (the previously unkown to me) Mark Records,
this volume headlined as _Music for World Peace_. It's on Qobuz,
at least.

It's not especially complicated music, at least one piece there
being written for student ensemble, and all for wind band. But
it's also idiomatic & fluid, and so perhaps the sort of thing some
people here would enjoy.... Tonal music for wind band is not really
my thing, but it's still "contemporary classical" right? (When I
say I come to contemporary music more from a "classical" background,
I suppose it's sensible for someone to think I have conservative
musical preferences....)

And I thought it just might be interesting, in a relatively random
way, what pops up with young people....

Thanks. I can understand why this music is popular among certain youngsters. I did find this link easy to listen to.

The latest solo bassoon offering (here with electronics):

https://newfocusrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/set

New/classical label New Focus has been increasing their pace of
releases considerably lately, with a wide variety of material
"combining composition & improvisation" (as the not-so-old cliche
goes...). They're also on streaming, although maybe not the very
newest releases yet.

One thing I really like about Alan Hovhaness is that while rubbing shoulders with Cage et al he also made his living selling sheet music and taking commissions, on at least one occasion from a student brass band. And I found out the person teaching at a local community gamelan I was part of is actually a composer who took a hard swerve from, like, 'post-atonality' into writing for local community occasions, writing for children, etc...

These sorts of overlap are common enough in free improvisation...
not exactly the easiest field for making a living.

But Marcon's recording has been ordered as well because he plays more less-known overtures, and at least as lively as Alessandrini.

> The recording of the Mozart overtures by Marcon is not as interesting as expected just because of those more less-known overtures. They are less-known for a good reason: being not interesting. But the very well known overtures are all there, in fine performances. 16 overtures in total. The sound is good, but not top quality.

Having heard now his Nozze di Figaro overture it is clear: Chauvin is the way to go. Brilliant.

Charles Ives - Songs (Gerald Finley, Julius Drake)

Wonderful recording. Mr. Finley has an expressive and easy to listen to voice.
This goes up there with Jan deGaetani / Gilbert Kalish.

On Hyperion, with audiophile sound engineering.

Both seconded. It's been years since I listened to the Finley, should do so
again.
