Eastman was a pupil of Cage, who was ultimately rejected by the Cage/Feldman milieu because of his militant queer attitude. He kind of went bad, heroin and poverty in New York, and early death.

I first discovered him when Iklectik in London did an Eastman festival - from that moment I was hooked. For me he is the most interesting, most authentic, of the American repetitive minimalists.

And now, finally he has been sanctified by Arditti, Ardittified. This transcription of Evil Nigger rocks!

Volume 3 of the Eastman series on New Amsterdam was also released
last month. There're quite a few Eastman recordings now.

Certainly one can hear the similarities in his music, the unfolding
of continuity & increasing complexity, with various contemporary
efforts. In most cases though, my impression is that these are
parallel developments, and not people being influenced by Eastman.

I'm thinking of improvised music, groups that specialize in a sort
of continuous unfolding, a gathering of forces....

It's been one common approach to improvising a "form," usually
involving gathering stylistic variety along the way. Meaning it's
the sort of approach one can pick out of MANY contemporary efforts.
It's not my favorite approach though, because I have limited desire
to hear rhythmic continuity.... (And note that Cage's late music
does NOT have the sort of temporal directionality of Eastman, i.e.
the arrow of increasing momentum/complexity....) So that said, a
couple of possible suggestions out of so many:

The Australian trio "The Necks" has been around for a long time,
and is one of the godfathers of this sort of thing. They have
several albums.

And then more recently, there's "playing" with continuity, i.e.
moving on a bit stylistically, e.g. the latest from DLW:

(I think I actually noted the first _Beats_ here. I enjoy their
"opposite" constructions more, i.e. _Grammar II_.... And I have
the feeling as well that Eastman would enjoy _Beats II_.)
