In a major blow to Franco-Australian relations, the Singing Budgie, Kylie Minogue, has released a new single, Padam, Padam, which has the same title as a classic chanson realiste recorded by the doyenne of French chanteuses, Edith Piaf.
There is nothing remotely realist about the Budgie's effort: in it she warbles that someone she met in a nightclub wants to take all her clothes off. This cannot possibly be realistic because (a) Miss Minogue is now old enough for a Las Vegas residency and (b) half her audience consists of young(ish) gentlemen who want to take all each other's clothes off. That's right: Judy Garland --> Lisa Minelli --> Kylie Minogue.

Anyway, here is Mme Piaf in full cry:

and here, I'm afraid, is the Budgie's:

I am sure that the country which brought us Lully, Rameau, Debussy and Ravel will survive her. Just.

Francophiles will have noticed that in the last line of Piaf's "Padam, Padam", there is a direct quotation from Elvis Presley: " ... mon coeur de bois", literally a wooden heart.
I can't think of a simple, eloquent translation for "coeur de bois", unlike "langue de bois" (officialese) or "gueule de bois" (hangover). It suggests a heart that has been hardened by grief and disappointment. It certainly doesn't mean "hard-hearted".
Presley of course was channelling "Muss I den?" a popular song in Swabian dialect, famous for being played by Kriegsmarine bands when crews were boarding their warships before setting sail. Perhaps it's most celebrated performance (not by Elvis Presley) was when the crew boarded the battleship "Bismarck" prior to its first and last voyage.
The "Bismarck" did manage to sink the "Hood" which just goes to show that some hoods are tougher than others ...
I think I had better stop now.

But will Australia and the rest of the world survive her? Some French friends I have here are not too keen on Piaf, or for that matter Jacques Tati, so I wouldn't be too worried about France.

Why would you need Jaques Tati when you have the immortal Barry Humphries?

You can trust a nation built by convicts to master the gallows sense of humour. Somehow chopping people's heads off didn't seem to have the same effect.

Tati never knew when to stop, which eventually bankrupted the man: I like "Jour de Fete" as much as anything he did later. I didn't used to like Piaf either, until I got to know a bit more about the world she was singing about, the world of the chanson realiste. "L'accordeoniste" still moves me to tears. Then there's Trenet: I love "Menilmontant", "Boum!", "Les enfants s'ennuient le dimanche", "Que reste-t-il de nos amours?". Lastly, Francoise Hardy, the voice of Les trentes annees glorieuses, le temps de l'amour, le temps des copains, et de l'aventure ...

There was certainly a sadistic streak in a good deal that Humphries did, plus a good deal of Melbourne private school snobbery, to be honest. In fact he was more than a little in love with the Melbourne of the 1950s, with its "iconic" brand names and its little prejudices: he could wax quite poetical about a suburban tram depot or a fading advertisement on the side of a corner store. For the modern leftish Melbourne couple with their sniffy fetishes and food fads, he would have felt nothing but contempt.

Sir Les was a money-spinner, played to the gallery.

The production of Playtime bankrupted Tati, although I have to say I love Les vacances de Mr Hulot best. As for Barry Humphries, he was an icon for sure, a very Ozzy one. Immense wit. Dame Edna still lives on in spirit.

Thanks for that, Graham. The accompanying eulogy is, characteristically, perversely wrong-headed. Edna Everage was no puncturer of snobbery: she was a massive snob herself in a peculiarly Melbournian way. Of course, many Australians will swear on a stack of bibles higher than the Sydney Opera House that Australia is a perfectly egalitarian society where snobbery does not exist. They're wrong, and this is no discredit to Australia because perfectly egalitarian societies devoid of snobbery do not exist.

I'm afraid Neil Singleton, leftish journalist, also lives on in spirit, although Sandy Stone is no longer with us in spirit, the grey fog of the RSL Club and the Repat Hospital that permeated places like West Preston.

Meanwhile, I look forward to Kylie's forthcoming recordings of 'Milord', 'La Mer' and 'Mon amie la rose' ...

I saw Humphries in a one-man review when I lived in Perth in the early
70s. Edna was in the early stages of transitioning to the Dame
character. However, we’d seen “her” when she was still the Mooney Ponds
housewife and our neighbour in Perth exhibited so many of Edna’s foibles
that we often had to keep straight faces when we interacted.

Incidentally, I happened to come across Dame Edna Place when I was in
Melbourn earlier this year.

I first heard the Virginia Woolf of Moonee Ponds when I was actually living in Melbourne in the 1960s. It clarified my experience of that most respectable of cities a very great deal. Of course she became Dame Edna, which gave her an international audience, but IMO something was lost. And of course it must be hard to be a simple Aussie housewife withe the heart of a Heinrich Himmler if you're actually based in London.

It would be interesting to compare Piaf's chansons realistes with the Brecht / Weil stuff. Much more popular and just as dark, if not more so.

Autotune has such a weak lifeless sound.

Too bad Christie Laume didn't sing Padam Padam.

Kurt Weill is one of my absolute favourite songwriters.....
- The Alabama Song
- Speak Low
- September Song
- Moritat
- My Ship

The chord progressions are far more subtle with Kurt Weill than anything Piaf sang. I also like Lotte Lenya

Different audience. Piaf knew what her audience wanted. Lotte Lenya by her own admission didn't have much of a voice, but what she did, she did brilliantly. Her marital career is also interesting.

Meanwhile, My Fellow Australians (to coin a phrase) might like to compare the signature tune of our most famous radio serial

with this offering from France's most famous crooner:

Interesting..... I always liked the theme tune from Neighbours.

Maybe not France's most famous singer, but the singer I rate highest for his lyrics is Leo Ferre. Some wonderful poetry full of imagination.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TekXbQc5S4Y. Just marvellous.

Who else could conjure up a metaphor like this.....?

C’est pas tellement leurs bras
Comme une pince multiprise
Et qui vous prennent comme ça
Quand vient le temps des cerises
Moi ce qui me plaît chez les filles
C’est beaucoup mieux....

The linking of those singers by the makeup of their audiences is more
than a bit unfair. (I've never really understood that particular audience
phenomenom.) Garland, especially earlier in her career, was one of
the great American pop singers, and there are even some parallels with
Piaf (although not in their singing styles.)

Anyway, if France needs revenge, there will be an opportunity on
Saturday in Brisbane.

And a good percentage of the crowd for Australia v. France on Saturday in Brisbane will have something in common with the audiences for Mesdames Garland, Minelli and Minogue. The latter - together with Shirley B(r)assey - had a certain flamboyant, brassy quality in their performances which is perfect for drag shows, amateur or professional. This doesn't of course reflect on their abilities as popular singers, or, in the case of Miss Garland, as an actress. I remember being taken to see 'Meet Me in St Louis' as a small boy: even then, I felt a little tearful at 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". Later, I discovered that in the days before consensual same-sex activities in private ceased to be illegal, "a friend of Dorothy" was gay argot for, well, gay. The reference was, of course, to "The Wizard of Oz".

Miss Minogue has made a couple of appearances at the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras, and acknowledges her second audience with performances like this one:

And what may well be the most touching song in all of American musical
theater: Lost in the Stars.

My mother loved Judy and I've loved Judy since I was a kid. she was a stupendous performer, even after her voice was mostly shot. She was a terrific actress as well, even in dramatic roles, such as "The Clock" and "Judgement at Nuremberg."
