Soprano Anna Netrebko, once among the Metropolitan Opera’s biggest box
office draws, has sued the New York opera company and general manager
Peter Gelb, alleging defamation, breach of contract and other violations
related to the institution’s decision to drop her following Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine.

The suit, filed in US district court in Manhattan on Friday, asks for at
least $360,000 in damages for lost performance and rehearsal fees.
Netrebko claims the Met caused ”severe mental anguish and emotional
distress” that included “depression, humiliation, embarrassment, stress
and anxiety, and emotional pain and suffering.”

The Met dropped the Russian soprano from future engagements shortly after
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Gelb had demanded she repudiate
Vladimir Putin.

“Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Met and Peter Gelb have used Anna
Netrebko as a scapegoat in their campaign to distance themselves from
Russia and to support Ukraine,” the management of the 51-year-old soprano
said in a statement.

much worse than having your home destroyed and children killed by Putin's

It looks like la Netrebko has serious mental problems. Fortunately they

I wouldn't be too quick to judge. We may not know the whole story. Repudiating Putin gets you put in jail in Russia, it's not a simple matter. And she may have relatives in Russia who have been threatened. What was said between Gelb and Netrebko may not be public knowledge in its entirety. Plus I don't see where "mental problems" comes into it unless she's had some kind of diagnosis or has spoken on the subject.

Since 2014 ukrainian army and nazis brought the stress and
anxiety, pain and suffering to the local population in Donetsk
and Lugansk. Keep it mind every time when you talk about victims
of this war.

In the last few years Putin was invited by his friend
Zelenskyy to Ukraine to murder hundreds of thousands of
antisemites, the primary opponents of Putin and his
comrade in arms Zelenskyy.

Putin started this war by outlawing antisemitism.
Zelenskyy supported Putin by outlawing antisemitism.
This was the beginning of war.

It's quite a dodge for Putin and Zelenskyy to try to
appear as diametrical opposites when they are on the
same side in the War On Antisemitism.

You insinuate that Russian and Ukrainian "oligarchs" are
opposed to each other? They are the *same* Jews who Putin
and Zelenskyy have worked for their entire lives.

"Agreed", defending Zelenskyy makes no sense with simultaneously attacking Putin: they are cut from the same

Filed in Manhatten? Going to be a hard sell getting a Manhatten jury
to award damages to a Met soprano because she wouldn't denounce Putin.

The MET has been rather unlucky in courts as of late after they've terminated contracts (e.g. James Levine). Whatever the facts are concerning Netrebko's claim, she'd be foolish not to attempt to claim her money. They'll most likely settle.
