Barnum considered himself to be a moralist. I'll
assume there were skeptics about Barnum's claims at the
time, as skepticism is a traditional American
institution.

Actually, Barnum did not invent the circus to evade
supposed anti-theater laws, but copied other circuses,
already established as a crookedinstitution.

The Puritans did impose bans on music, starting in England, but
these were less successful.

Notice I didn't mention circuses specifically, which was one of his
businesses. There was a progression. Maybe you should read the
book, instead of making up random objections. The parallels with
the internet "dotcom" era -- which are not spelled out in this book
from the 80s -- also make it interesting.
