I think comparing Guilini to media influencers is rather tenuous.

Dr Stein reminds us of the days when the BBC employed people of the calibre of John Amis to talk about music. They wouldn't do it now. Too elitist.
On You Tube there is a clip of a recent Prom performance of the Grand Grand Grand Concerto Populare, originally written for one of the Hoffnung Interplanetary Festivals. This time round, they employed a presenter to explain the jokes. Back in the 1950s, they didn't need one.

And how wonderful to have a Jewish psychiatrist in this group. We've been needing one for quite a while ...

And Antony Hopkins! I used to listen to him regularly. He once explained
how Rachmaninov composed each variation in the Paganini Rhapsody.

The piece also indulges in the old timey notion that orchestral performance would collapse without a conductor beating time.
Modern orchestras are composed of highly trained music professionals who actually do make the sound with or without the conductor. They know the repertoire inside out. The idea that orchestras would turn into rowdy mess without a guy for the audience to look comes from the era that orchestras were all basically pickup bands.
