Another weekend, another notable movie with the kid.

I can’t believe I was initially concerned that an 18-year-old in 2024 would
not be charmed by this brilliant albeit 90 year old movie. He was involved
throughout; said he loved it; said it was great. He was enthusiastically
smiling and laughing at the end when the trumpet blew and the walls of
Jericho fell. He really admired Clark Gable, though once he called him
Rhett Butler. It was amusing as he kept conflating the two characters,
admiring the way Clark Gable could take command of a situation. When he
told somebody on the bus that he had “millions,“ the kid commented, “he
always has millions.“

It’s quite a movie. When it comes to star quality, the leads, Clark Gable
and Claudette Colbert, still have few equals. The dialogue is witty, the
story is delightful, and even the B&W cinematography stands out as a work
of art. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT remains the gold standard for romantic
comedies. If you have never seen it, or even if you haven’t seen it in a
while, this movie deserves a look.
