so tonal!

just poking around, some melodies I wouldn't mind hearing a few more times. and fortunately I am less strictly interested in voice-and-piano now than when I started this thread.

Interestingly enough, Rubbra stopped using key signatures in (many
of?) his late works. It's not that they really become thorny or
whatever, but they also don't fit modern tonality very well, taking
on an interval-based counterpoint partly inspired by early music....

I did forget about the piano part (and/or how little straight
voice-and-piano there was in Rubbra...).

Not tonal (& no piano):

Scott Fields Ensemble performing _The Songs of Steve Dalachinsky_:

And review posted to my "jazz thoughts" today....

I know the worlds of EM and NM overlap, but is Norbert Rodenkirchen's appearance both here and on the "Boethius: Songs of Consolation" page the first evidence of that on your site?

Well, Rodenkirchen himself has appeared in both areas before....

And I suppose another entire region of "overlap" consists of
contemporary improvisation on old instruments. But I can't think
of an individual offhand who has been so prominent in both areas....
I think we will see more of it though, including in vocals.

https://folkways.si.edu/ted-puffer/charles-ives-songs-vol-2-1915-1925/classical/music/album/smithsonian

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_neAf6yaV1_xhe0zHxxUVzoYe3bsVdMCeQ

there's also a volume 1 (1894-1915).

these ives songs are amazingly clear and serious music, first of all, and i can't get enough of this singer Ted Puffer, who does with this music what i ALWAYS wish singers would do with art song, the 'non-operatic' approach. and it's not like he had any special connection to ives or stood outside the academic/institutional world of midcentury classical music.. and actually his career mostly consisted of starting up opera and comic opera companies in various western and northeatern US cities. so i guess i just happen to like his particular voice and style.

and Tenney by this time was already known entirely as a bleeding-edge electronic-music guy. so it's a weird pair.

anybody have recommendations for english-language art song recordings?

Well I appreciate music by Milton Babbitt, who was a great setter
of English lyrics, but recordings are limited....

Probably due to it being a Folkways recording. The voice sounds okay and
the piano is audible if a bit out of tune. The producer went on to work
with Country Joe and the Fish but was well-known for blues field recordings.

Worth a listen for those interested in the repertoire.

So it's authentic blues distortion in the piano?

I got used to the sound though.... I probably shouldn't have noted
it here, but it really was the first thing to knock me over the
head. I don't listen to recordings from 1960 much, I guess....

Also, per the exclamation marks in the Subject, of course Tenney's
is one of the most cited recordings of the Ives Concord Sonata....

Could be! Maybe it was recorded by a portable tape machine.

It's very mono, too. We may be spoiled by the sound from the major studios.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

Shocking reversal from a few years ago in the dastgah thread when I over-warned everybody how bad the Eqbal Azar recordings sounded... in this case though I got to the Ives songs from Folkways' field-recording-style acoustic blues releases so I guess I was ready for badly-tuned distant-sounding piano...

As for Babbitt you may be interested if you don't already know this recent recording of Complete Songs For Female Voice and Piano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcMEMIAzx0c&list=PLMjzU_k2nw4rNyfSd16LJ_OuTiH1aMcsc , which I just found following your recommendation.

Hmm, there seem to be two new such recordings released toward the
end of last year....

I like this a lot. Sad that the whole album isn't just voice-and-piano. Also never heard of Frankie Armstrong but she seems interesting. Wikipedia notes a connection to John Kirkpatrick who I've recently been reading up on, the biggest Ives advocate of the 20th century. Plus from Armstrong a variety of activity in folk and free jazz / free improv. Will have to investigate further.
