According to Wired.com, the 16 Sci-Fi Movies You Need to Watch Before You Die:

- Dune and Dune: Part Two
- Arival
- RoboCop
- Inception
- Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- The Matrix
- The Terminator
- Terminator 2: Judgement Day
- Escape From New York
- Ex Machina
- Back to the Future
- Alien
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Blade Runner

As usual with such lists, only about two or three are actually worth
watching, the rest are over-hyped garbage and boring drivel.

Well, I personally do single out three of those as coming from the top
shelf. And a fourth one as honorable mention. Not a lot of garbage and
drivel, though, I'd have to say.

Unlike the two of you I won’t make everybody guess what I’m talking about.

The first Dune was very good.
Robocop was great, at the time anyway.
The original Star Wars trilogy is superb.
The matrix films suck
Terminators one and two are classics
Back to the future is a perfect movie and the other two are nice.
Alien was good
Close encounters wasn’t that great at the time and it really does not hold
up today
2001 is a brilliant movie best enjoyed on a humongous screen
Blade Runner is terrific.

The others on the list aren’t worth talking about.

Though it's since been diluted by sequels and ripoffs, ALIEN was
thoughtful, exquisite terror that never put one foot wrong.

2001:aSO has been (somewhat) diminished visually by CGI, but it stands
as a socio-philosophical masterpiece and maybe the best movie ever.

ARRIVAL is unparalleled as an affecting and provocative sci-fi, and is
even better than DUNE by the same director.

Those are my three. BLADE RUNNER is my "honorable mention".

Meanwhile though, the first MATRIX was a flat-out revelation visually.
I.e., I'm doubting you left the theater saying "That sucked."

And, (the first) STAR WARS was an unmitigated triumph, but not sci-fi.

That exhausts my supply of contentiousness for the moment...
