Any thoughts about this man, who made his name on Nimbus with Haydn and is now recording with Naxos? (I wonder how much the Danish Chamber Orchestra are paying Klaus Heyman for the privilege?)

So far, I've only heard his Brahms, which I like, but will definitely be getting the late Haydn symphonies ...

There are many excellent recordings of the later symphonies. Adam Fisher is interesting for the middle part of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre, which is less widely recorded.

The Haydn is (much) more conventional than the Brahms -- and all the better for it IMO.

Hyperactive scamp conducting, which sometimes works very well (Beethoven #1, early Mozart symphonies). I really like his Dvorak 9 on the Berlin digital concert hall too.

I was wondering the same thing. Had lunch at a friend's Shabbos. Two of the guests were named Sally and Harriet. I can remember knowing one Sally (an old boss) but not a single Harriet, which I looked up and found it's much more common in the UK than the US and is more popular among African Americans, because of Harriet Tubman and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Of course, there was Sally Ride and Dally Field and Sally Struthers and Sally Kellerman and Harriet Nelson, but I didn't know them.

Hi Andrew,

No relation to Ben Shrag; it's my screen name, and it's exactly as you say: Ben = "son of", plus my father's two first names.

Best Regards,

Jonathan

Absolutely, Howard or Harold for Chaim, Alan for Ari or Arieh, etc. It is common, but pretty meaningless. Many, many Jews have secular names bearing no obvious relation to their Hebrew name. This is less likely the more orthodox you get. In my own case, I'm sure I got a Hebrew name (and the accompanying circumcision) only due to pressure on my parents from relatives. They named me Franklin after FDR and my Hebrew name is Ephraim. They share the "fr" sound and that's all. There is no Ephraim in my family that I am named after. Franklin means "free man" and Ephraim means "fruitful." In the case of my younger brother, I don't even know if he HAS a Hebrew name (nor does he) and I wouldn't know how to find out.

I'm about to finish the Craft box with all the Schoenberg volumes. All oth=
