I'm just finishing a wonderful book by *Jacques Drillon*: /Liszt
transcripteur/, followed by /Schubert et l'infini/...
[Actes Sud 5797 March 2005 ISBN 2-7427-5463-6]

Let's not forget that, as the Author writes, MAF is the only Composer
in the entire History of (Western scholarly) Music to have devoted at
least Half of his Energy, Time and Inspiration to _transcribing_ Music,
and, particularly, the Music of other Composers, be they Members (by
marriage) of his own Family...

It's fashionable among uneducated music-lovers to denigrate this kind
of composition... Let's leave them to their shitty tastes, and dive
into the Overture to Tannhaüser or the lieder by Chouchou (9 CDs full
to bursting)...

Lisztian addicts will of course have had Leslie Howard's (Hypérion)
complete collection for a long time... Far from "perfect", and even
often quite disappointing (sight-reading?), it does at least have the
great merit of unravelling this fabulous Work, with in particular the
performer's analyses absolutely fascinating and of a rare Erudition
(but _only in the separate boxed sets_, alas)...

The Book includes an EXHAUSTIVE list of transcriptions, in SEARLE and
RAABE numbering...

The icing on the cake: the Book is very well written...

The Liszt essay dates from the Eighties, not that there's anything wrong with that...
