Hyperion will now unload their catalog for streaming every 2 weeks. The new batch contains a large amount of piano recordings, including the remainder of Stephen Hough’s 44 Hyperion recordings. My opinion of his playing has gone way up upon listening to most of these recordings. I particularly enjoyed his “Dreams” CD.

A gem to be singled out is Hamelin’s brand new Nocturnes and Barcarolle by Gabriel Faure. I never cared for the tendency in French pianists of using the pedal as sparsely as possible, producing a clear, but dry and colorless tonal palette. Hamelin uses the pedal generously and skillfully, making this my favorite recording of this music.

Another non-French pianist who plays Debussy and Ravel with remarkable color and skill is Steven Osborne whose recordings on Hyperion are streaming. An all-together beautiful player - also in Rachmaninov and other Russian composers.

Of course there are loads of choral, orchestral and chamber music recordings newly released on streaming services as well.

I am hoping that Robert King's 1996 Mass in B minor / The King's Consort will appear. I'd really like to hear it.

Perhaps it will appear with the 3rd batch this Friday, September 29th.
