I've been enjoying Le Marteau Sans Maitre and just starting on Derive 1+2.

Can any fans of Boulez recommend further recordings?

Pli selon pli. The performance to hear is with Matthias Pinstcher, I think it’s on youtube - I can let you have the concert recording if you send me a message. Also Bruno Maderna’s recording of the central sections of it.

David Fray playing the piano version of 12 Notations - you may also like the orchestrations - I remember a recording by Michael Gielen.

The sonatine when you’re in the mood for serial music

Daniel Kawka’s recordings - Dérive and Mémoriale and Marteau sans Maître.

I’m not keen on Boulez’s own commercial recordings - though I prefer the earliest of them (with Domaine Musicale) I’m not so interested in the piano sonatas myself, someone else will no doubt comment on them. Some of the music (like Rituel for Bruno Maderna) is spacialised and for me, it’s not very effective at home.

You should take a listen to his “...explosante-fixe..." There is a great
recording of this on DG with the Ensemble Intercontemporain that is coupled
with Notations.

My favorite Boulez pieces are _Pli selon pli_ and _Derive 2_, and
those have been mentioned. As implied, a new reading of _Pli selon
pli_ would be welcome, but Kawka's release of _Derive 2_ is excellent.

Also mentioned, "...explosante-fixe..." is the piece Boulez considered
to be his most accessible, fwiw....

In another direction, per your comment elsewhwere about liking the
"sound" of _Le Marteau_, maybe this is a place to hear something
like Feldman's _For Christian Wolff_. This basic "sound" spread
in the later 20th century.

I've got Le Marteau with Boulez conducting on DG. Very nice (pretty) and as Stravinsky said, "reminds me of ice cubes clinking in a glass". Other works might be Repons (fair bit of electronics), Sur Incises, and a work I have to devote time to which is Pli Selon Pli, which almost everyone says is a masterpiece.

I agree about Le Marteau, always liked it (5+ decades since first hearing?).. Right now I am listening to Structures for Two Pianos (1955) played by the Kontarskys on an old Mace LP.. It actually sounds pretty decent using a mono cartridge. The pianos are different enough (piano brands, touch or miking?) that it is easy to hear the interplay.
