All music critics are would-be viola players who failed the IQ test. Anyway, I suppose that this recording plus the Tippet could be seen as a bit of a boost for English music, but I was very pleased to see the acknowledgement of so many French musicians, especially Veronique Gens, whom I first encountered recording the Chants d' Auvergne for Naxos, many years ago.

That Elgar "viola concerto" is just the pour man's adaptation of the cello concerto.

I love the viola as an instrument, but I can't stand these maladaptations.

Surprised to see this here, but I did add remarks on this worthwhile
recording to my Cage page -- back in '22 when it was released.

I also reviewed this item, despite that it's later than my usual
era on the medieval side. So I agree it was worth noting, as a
"new" composer, who by the way has a new release this month on
Hyperion as well....

Completely ignoring as usual the world outside
that little medieval province known as Europe.

Nothing is more phoney than the Gramophoney.
