Bernstein's "Nimrod" was extracted from his concert performance and can also be seen on YouTube. It has attracted well over 300 comments under the video, ranging from "ridiculous" to "just glorious" and "definitely the best version ever" to "this is horrendous!" ... Is it just a case of "one man's meat is another man's poison"? ...

Interestingly, in the rehearsal of "Nimrod" the woodwinds were a fraction slower when they come in than they were in the concert performance. Whether it was Bernstein who moved it along very slightly at that point, or whether the woodwind players decided to take matters into their own hands, one doesn't know. In any case, it frequently happens that rehearsals don't necessarily match the concert performance, as any orchestral player will confirm ....

For me the structure begins to lose it's shape at this speed, but each to their own.

Anna Rakitina gets closer to an ideal speed with the above recording in Boston.
