The complete piano music of Faure with Jean-Phillipe Collard from a set of many works by the composer on Erato. Thanks to Dave Hurwitz for the heads up.

Trying to find a biography of him with no luck. I also have and enjoy his complete Debussy traversal. Any opinions?

I like Collard a lot, but don't find the softer/damp feel that I feel is needed for this composer. In short he doesn't quite erase memories of the Faure recordings that Albert Ferber made on the Saga label when on LP.

I like Collard too but prefer Germaine Thyssens-Valentin for Faure. She studied under him. Wonderful recordings mostly on Testament i think from memory.

There is no stupid one-stop solution to Fauré's piano music. There is Heidseick, there is Jean-Paul Sevilla. There are many more.

I would recommend giving the new recording of the Nocturnes and Barcarolles by Marc-Andre Hamelin a try. For me, a beautiful sound is imperative in Faure. Collard is solid of course, but the EMI sound engineering is too dry for my taste. Hyperion, on the other hand is state of the art, and Hamelin embraces the sustain pedal skillfully.

It’s on streaming services, by the way.

Actually scratch Karajan's and Krips' Beethoven cycles (prefer Karajan over Krips here definitely - and would probably rate Karajan's 1963 cycle as my third favourite; after Mengelberg's (*he has reorded at least some symphonies more than once) and Celibidache's (*same as Mengelberg)); I only need Celibidache and Mengelberg.

Or wait; I think I might keep Krips' cycle. Yesterday evening before sorting his cycle out, I thought I should relisten to it... at least some Symphonies and to compare them with Karajan's 1963 interpretations - just relistened a bit again. I really hate Karajan's sound now tbh... it's really just a lot of puree... and his phrasing is much worse than Krips' as well... Maybe Krips' cycle is my 3rd favourite Beethoven cycle... at least I like it very much, and more so than Karajan's (I also like the singing more in Krips' 9th) - at least from what I compared. Guess I'm going to keep it...

*Most of the soloists if not all are better in Krips' 9th compared to Karajan's I think (would have to relisten)... maybe not the choir, they are both good; in this case my impression was likely mainly influenced by the phrasing...Janowitz is really horrible and I'm also not a fan of Berry... Anyway I really do think Karajan's Beethoven and most if not everything I heard of him sucks.

WRT Mitropoulos' DG I have to add that I do not like Simoneau.

I should have been more careful:

My favourite composers are actually just Mozart and Beethoven - noone comes close to them imo... after them I like Brahms by far the most...

The other composers I listed I find fascinating and inspiring - some more than others -, but they are just not my favourite composers... I don't really love their music, or at least not enough of it.

Scratch Gelber (and Richter as already mentioned); just not my style. I only added him because of his Brahms PC1, but the one by Kissin - the one posted by Dan some time ago in this ng - is just way better imo - I do not like Gelber's tone... and I'm also unsure about Volodos now - will have to relisten.

I'd probably rate Rihm above him - meaning Xenakis - thinking about it some more...

Both are not as radical as the others imo... and Xenakis has sth very primal; which is interesting... but... hmmm... I prefer Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Nono...

the other composers I mentioned; and less than Haydn, Schumann and Mahler as well... and some more...

*Have to think about my preferences a little bit more, I guess... but Mozart and Beethoven are my favourites; after them comes Brahms... and then it gets difficult..
