BBC Building a Library 28 October 2023 - 4 Impromptus D935 Iain Burnside and Andrew McGregor

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001rr7g

Not specially a fan of Burnside who's a Brendel fanboy in these, though he's quite an entertaining speaker. For the first in F minor he fails to mention Pires, Schnabel and Zimerman but does mention Sokolov and Lupu who are both interesting. The other 3 have much more competition, and at the end his choice is Lupu, which is hard to disagree with.

Lupu is too smooth and buttery for my current pair
of ears. BTW the link I posted withour comment
to the 8 Russians' impromptu set should not be
taken as an endorsement. At the end of the day
I will keep Schnabel and skip the others.

Cheers

I must say, I think the Lupu is outstanding, a very special performance of the F minor and the rest too.

Lupu IS OUTSTANDING indeed, but in a way I
no longer like as much as I used to. People
can (and do) get tired of eating the same
salad with the same dressing all the time.
I like to change dressings once in a while.

Cheers

Which F minor? The first or the last?

These were Schnabel’s final recordings I think.

Andy - did the review have anything interesting to say about them? (I’m too lazy to listen, sorry! I’d rather listen to the music!)

Schnabel wasn't mentioned, just Fischer because he was Brendel's teacher. Like DK I think highly of Schnabel in these. I was referring to the first Fm impromptu. The reviewer spent a long time talking about Liubimov on fortepiano. Not my cup of tea. He also played Perahia a lot. Typical Brit reviewer.

Yes, I too think he is the best in these. The No. 4 in F-minor with YES which you posted a while ago - and which Henk liked as well - was good... but.... she is no Schnabel.

I actually listened to Schnabel playing these yesterday, without having read this thread; was going through some Schubert stuff again, wondering if I really like his piano solo music more than Beethoven's - which shouldn't be hard, as I really hate Beethoven' solo piano music, as opposed to his PCs 2,3 and 4 - and out of the impromptus I actually only like D.935 No. 2 in A-flat major.

In the end I came to the conclusion that I do not connect very well with the solo piano music of either and that I like Beethoven (because of his symphonies and pcs) more than Schubert... much, much more.
