When I was discovering the Beatles as a kid, I loved the "Paul is Dead" stuff. I knew he wasn't actually dead, because Paul's appearance and voice never changed any more than was normal. His musical signatures persisted.

But I found the notion that the Beatles would plant clues to the PiD rumor titillating. The supposed clue I liked best was the audio of the death scene in Act IV of King Lear. It's objectively there in the song -- for some reason that wasn't clear.

I could definitely see the Beatles, especially John, enjoying teasing fans about something like this...whether or not they actually had any part in starting the mystery...

When I was at the U of Edinburgh I studied Shakespeare...one play a day...I discovered King Lear then...

I loved studying Shakespeare in college.

I was nine or ten when I first read that about King Lear and "I Am the Walrus." I took a volume of Shakespeare from my mother's bookshelf -- it had been given to her by my paternal grandmother -- and it practically opened up right to that death scene!

I lived in a different part of the world once, where there was a little brewpub called the Shakespeare Tavern. I'd stop by about once a week for a flagon of the product on which the brewer pulled out all the stops; it was rich, dark, powerful, malty, yeasty and delicious. They named it King Lear.
