This for me is a very interesting interview/documentary with Eschenbach, a former excellent pianist and now mainly a conductor. This video also covers Eschenbach's experience with many famous conductors and pianists, and also composers of the last part of the 20th century. I note also his late and deep admiration for Shostakovich's music.

As a conductor, however, it seems to me that the jury is out, and many orchestras appear not to be in love with his approach to music. As a person however he seems very well liked on a personal level.

The video is fascinating. Any thoughts about Eschenbach here? Thx.

I remember a DG recording of the Hammerklavier Sonata. He was wearing bell-bottom pants on the cover photo. That recording seems to have disappeared from sight. I’d guess it was released about 50 years ago.

There's a Beethoven Pco #1 (which appeared in the GPOC) with Karajan/Berlin which is unusual for its incredibly distended tempos, which were presumable Escenbach's idea.

I find it compelling when I'm in the mood ...

There’s a Beethoven op 15 with Eschenbach conducting and Richter playing piano which has a slow allegro movement. Richter himself was proud of it (p 327 of the notebooks)

I heard Eschenbach live several times during the
1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, before he turned
to conducting. IMHO he is/was the best pianist
to come out of Germany post WWII. Listen to:
