I'd go back even further, to 1967. Once Lennon had made it, he got bored, lazy, and reliant on drugs and the company of freaks.

My impression is that Lennon was presenting the others with song fragments by 1967, and tasking them (Martin, Emerick and his bandmates) with turning the fragments into songs.

John started to get back on track again in India and then during his (Walls & Bridges) time with May -- only to be derailed again by Yoko & drugs.

It was effectively over for him the day that he met the Black Widow - she
saw a lucrative meal ticket, and exploited his drug addled mentallity
ruthlessly (and still does).
