I listened to his Die Walkure this afternoon and enjoyed it. Not difficult with Birgit Nillson in fine voice.

I'm not very familiar with Leinsdorf as a conductor.

Would someone explain to me why Apple would buy Bis, if they intend to bury the BIS catalog, and have no interest in classical music?

String quartets (the ensemble) have a lot going for them. There's not only =
a magnificent repertoire of quartets from Haydn to the present, you can als=
o add one or two players and perform quintets and sextets as well. And you =
don't have to pay a fortune for a Heldendirigent.

May I recommend the Boccherini quintets with two cellos as well as those wi=
th guitar? Then there's the Bartoks which are arguably close to the summit =
of Western musical achievement, like the late Beethovens. There's the monum=
ental Shostakovich set, which I have yet to really explore. Etc., etc.

Is the price on this serious? Relatively cheap at Amazon.ca.

It is a box set with *21 CDs*.

"Cause de celebre" as opposed to "scientifically valid." This is a
long-debunked point. From 2008:

https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?idC35191&page=1

"Thomas Peterson of the National Climatic Data Center surveyed dozens of
peer-reviewed scientific articles from 1965 to 1979 and found that only
seven supported global cooling, while 44 predicted warming. Peterson
says 20 others were neutral in their assessments of climate trends."

The casual reader could reach the incorrect conclusion from the popular
press:

"The '70s was an unusually cold decade. Newsweek, Time, The New York
Times and National Geographic published articles at the time speculating
on the causes of the unusual cold and about the possibility of a new ice
age."

There was also a "nuclear winter" idea publicized in the eighties.

Is there any of the manic Klemperer in the Warners big box?

Like the Bruckner 4 on Vox that takes only 51 minutes?:

I can appreciate that point of view. But I also think that Sanderling,
at his pace, gives the music weight, which I find all to the good. And to
my ears it never drags. (But I should also revisit one of the others.)

Record or CD catalog number please?

Or a link to a streaming service that
others can use to listen? Otherwise
no one can tell if you actually heard
it, or if you just filled your ears with
cow shit.

For me both in orchestral and operatic material he did have an eye for bringing out coloristic details other conductors let slide and he seemed to be better in unfamiliar repertory than the more familiar Beethoven and Brahms which though well played seemed to be lacking an inner spark. In opera I found this even more telling - though much of his recorded opera is very well played, for me much of it is just too literal. It depends on my mood - I can certainly enjoy the playing of the Boston Symphony in his ill-fated Lohengrin but really needs some inner passion and feeling that just isn't there. I have never heard the Act Three Prelude on the one hand so brilliantly played by Boston but its just so one damned note after another. I recall Osborne wrote that it was like having a traffic cop on the Indianapolis Speedway. His studio Walkure esp Act One is also lacking the passion it needs though its very well played. I like his Prokofiev as well and would have loved to have heard him record Romeo and Juliet. Interested in what you think of him??? best Randy
