I heard Ibragimova and Tiberghien playing the 1st and 2nd violin sonatas at Wigmore yesterday. Not a bad concert, it’s being broadcast on BBC later this week I think.

But that second sonata! And especially its long first movement. Does anyone make it come off the page? Maybe it’s just me but it seemed like very mediocre music in the concert. That whole sonata seemed disappointing apart from the (wonderful) variations.

I love those two sonatas, and, it's funny, especially that fierce opening mvt of the D minor.

In my experience Ibragimova is a performer who likes to bring out the complexities of the music; she can make familiar music sound difficult again, the way they sounded at first.

To the OP re: Ibragimova's Schumann recital.
I have listened to the D minor during lunch and it's terrific.
It's amazing, every time, Schumann wrote such great music for violin,
the string quartets, the trios and these sonatas.
If you want to try another traversal of the sonatas,
try Isabelle Faust with either Avenhaus or Melnikov.

I thought the first sonata was fabulous, I remember saying to myself that I was really glad to have gone to the concert. It’s just that long first movement of the second which was a problem for me as I said.

Tiberghien is good too - some lovely piano and violin textures - and they are a real team.

Ibragimova often rubs me the wrong way, in a good sense.
She does not necessarily deliver what you're used to.
Occasionally Ibragimova opts for expressiveness over technical perfection, and I think that's entirely in the spirit of the music.
The D minor is really a wonderful piece of music full of horrifying pain and longing for bygone innocence, all the things we know from the early Schumann music, but with a terrifying edge.
I'll listen to the other one tonight.

So I suddenly find myself enjoying the D minor in a rather restrained performance on a new release by Pierre and Théo Fouchenneret - streaming widely. Just my mood I guess !
