I agree. Unfortunately most of Petrov´s recorded ouevre is delightful bob-bons like the. His "Pictures" and "Symphonic Studies" bear witness to, what he also was capable of.

On the website of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, you can find his version of Bartok's 2nd. He played it in the finals. He finished after Moguilevsky, who played Rachmaninoff #3 and had an unfair advantage (certainly in the 1960s).

I didn’t know there was a record of him playing the Schumann etudes, thanks for mentioning. And I just saw he has a complete Prokofiev sonatas, I have and like his 8 and 9, so I will check the rest some time.

I’m listening now to his Berlioz/Liszt Symphonie Fantastique - and quite enjoying it too.
