Have you seen Clouzot’s Le Mystère de Picasso? It is extraordinary how every gesture he makes, every revision and erasure, seems to make something beautiful.

The article above is worth a read if this is of interest.
"Debussy did not like the label impressionist. He felt that it cast doubts on his originality. But he admitted a connection of sorts. Concerning the Images for orchestra he wrote: “I tried to make ‘something else’ of them and to create—in some manner—realities—what imbeciles call ‘impressionism,’ a term as poorly used as possible, especially by art critics . . .” By “realities” Debussy was referring to the approach he also followed in La Mer where he based his music not on an intermediary—like a painting of the sea—but on reality: the sea itself".

"Debussy was fascinated by the visual arts and literature, and his music frequently reflected his interests. But only a small portion of his compositions have titles that might seem Impressionistic. Several of his most famous pieces (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Pelléas et Mélisande....) actually owe their origin to another “ism” popular at the time — Symbolism, a movement in many ways the aesthetic opposite of Impressionism."

Hah, this was actually the thread in which Frank decided to block me - just a few days or a week after I started posting here.

Probably shouldn't have deleted my comments - because of the whole picture; but that's just what I do everywhere (Twitter etc); just privacy concerns I guess.

And to continue with Debussy......

“How much has to be explored and discarded before reaching the naked flesh of feeling.”
― Claude Debussy

This is exactly how Picasso saw art. There are some marvellous quotes from him, including this lovely quote which echoes Debussy completely:

"With me, a picture is a sum of destructions. I make a picture, and proceed to destroy it. But in the end nothing is lost - the red I have removed from one part shows up in another. When one begins a picture one often discovers fine things. One ought to beware of these, destroy one's picture, recreate it many times. On each destruction of a beautiful find, the artist does not suppress it - rather he transforms it, condenses it, makes it more substantial. The issue is the result of rejected discoveries. Otherwise one becomes one's own admirer. I sell myself nothing! I want to develop the ability to do a picture in such a way that no one can ever see how it has been done. To what end? What I want is that my picture should evoke nothing but emotion."
