Wow. This has got to be one of the most underrated works in the piano literature.

What are some good recordings?

I already know the ones on youtube (Pletnev 2002, Nasedkin, Shamray, Korepanova, Verheijden). Pletnev is the clear standout, but a single pianist can't exhaust the wealth of ideas.

I take it from the lack of responses that it's underappreciated here...

It's an amazing work and one of the very last things Tchaikovsky wrote.

Here's how to appreciate it..

Under the surface, it's a set of variations. Each piece explores and works through a duality. That is the "theme."

The "dark" side is marked harmonically. So first listen for the "dark" harmonies in each piece.

And now listen for how the two halves are reconciled...

Here’s a co-incidence. I read your post taking a break from preparing a talk for tomorrow night on “Transcending Duality’.

I’ll give the Tchaikovsky a listen. Thanks.

Interesting, what's the context for your topic?

I should add that Tchaikovsky constantly plays with phrases and shapes. Phrases constantly intersect and merge with one another. That's how he makes the sides relate to each other in interesting ways.
